paintingrookie Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Hi, Can anyone tell me how thick a drop top needs to be before it stops being a "thick veneer" and starts to influence tone? I', thinking 1/4 inch to 3/8inch quilted maple over ash. ta J Quote
westhemann Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 A "drop top" is a thick top that is bent at the armrest rather than carved... A "top" is a piece of wood used as a top or cap for the back wood...usually for aesthetic reasons, but in the case of some(like the LP) it has a signifigant effect on tone.. To answer your question...it is only a veneer if it is a veneer...they are very thin... I would guess that to affect tone at all it would need to be at least 3/8"..I am using 3/4" on my LP Quote
erikbojerik Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I think you can start to hear a difference around 1/4" - the thickness of a fretboard - and the thicker, the more. Quote
