The Nordic Gawd
yeah i dont see how i could possibly play jazz with 2 low strings. that would just be somewhat frightening sounding.
MikeB
like when u take a regular 6 string put 9's on it, and tune it to low-g tuning im not being a prick, but arent 9's normal strings, i play 9-42's and they are quite light. ive played 11's etc... they are heavy! mike
westhemann
9s are considered lights.that's what i play.10s regular...11s are medium...12s heavy.
MikeB
thats what i thought! yeh i have 9's on my ibanez and 10's on my gibbo kit thing! i was thinkin of tryin 8's on the ibanez, but i would need to adjust intonation and bust strings more yadda yadda.... westhemann
if you want a slinkier feel try a 24 5/8 scale.
westhemann
plus you will bust strings less because of the lighter tension
MikeB
yeh i know, but the ibanez is stuck at 25.5, unnless i get a neck etc... but i may just tune to Eflat im still thinkin about this! brothers guitar seems to be around 24 5/8 i havent measured, but it sure feels slinkier
westhemann
i played 25.5 for years and i was convinced that was the way to go...but when i bought my premade carvin neck it was 25" and the difference was amazing.

IWishICouldShred
meshuggah has custom 8-string guitars with 2 extra low strings. they use a bass string for the lowest one. their highest string is a 9.
rob
well if they have their guitars tuned so low what does their bassist do?
Digideus
Ever seen a suspension bridge? Those cables are his bass strings! An 8 String fixed bridge must be the best invention for Detuning Metal ever! Id go Low B and High A. Someone give Trey Azagthoth a call and tell him. imagine the sweeps!!!! bowser
well if they have their guitars tuned so low what does their bassist do? They have no bassist! at least last I knew, and thats why they went to the 8 strings rather than the 7's so that they could cover the bass and guitar with the two 8 strings

westhemann
btw rather than simply back up the guitars alot of bassists counterpoint the rythm section, which sounds better to my ears.i think you will never replace a good bassist with low strings
9of7 X 3of2
btw rather than simply back up the guitars alot of bassists counterpoint the rythm section, which sounds better to my ears.i think you will never replace a good bassist with low strings Very very true, but in most cases, like around here, a good bass player is really hard to find. So most bands do what they must to get by with out one. Unless your completely utilizing all 8 strings, then that instument is nothing more than a fashion statment! I see alot of guitar palyers that use 7 strings, and the only use 4 of the 7 strings. So whats the point? If you want low tunings and a sick tone, get a baritone.
