Vinny
When I read the posts in this section I often think to myself, that was covered in Bob Flexners Book. This book was mentioned here a good while back so I bought a copy and I'm very glad I did. I often refer back to it to get an answer I need. The book is based on wood finishing, but all the techniques apply to guitar making. A few topics covered: sanding using a scraper pore filling water based finishes lacquer based finishes french polish shellac finish conversion varnish oil based finishes which finish to choose spraying color tinting dyes, powder, alcohol and water based pigment dyes different types of stains and how they work AND much more. My opinion is EVERY guitar builder should have a copy of this book. Your local Library may have a copy. If you do get a copy, please post your thoughts here, good and bad for others to read. DC Ross
That's a good one. I have it on loan from the library right now. Another one that I've found really helpful so far is Jeff Jewitt's "Tauntons Complete Illustrated Guide To Finishing".
Racer X
Good idea. Just requested a copy from my local library. A great resource that's easily forgotten.
ihocky2
I highly recommend buying Flexner's book if you have the means. It is a fantastic book, and I refer back to it quite often, even after reading it cover to cover 3 times.
chennik
I have to agree. I got this book as a gift, and I read it cover to cover in a matter of 3 days. I think I've read it about once a year since. It's an incredible resource that keeps information on hand that you might not be able to keep in memory. I would go so far as to say this book is about as important to what we do as Melvyn Hiscocks book. Maybe not quite that much, but close. Drak
We have pushed that book around here for many years now, but it never hurts to boost it again. I was heralding that book almost 10 years ago, it is one of the best reference books out there, absolutely. :D
Drak
My first recommendation for that book here on the forum was on Aug. 20, 2003.

Drak
Yes, it is an awesome book indeed, and I'm glad someone mentioned it again, it can't be stressed enough how good that book is (and fun to read as well) for people trying to do their own finishing. Racer X
My copy showed up at the library, Saturday. Man, that thing is a time machine! I sit down, and next thing I know, several hours have flown by! Really great book. I'd love to cough up the cost of this loaner, just so I could keep it! Vinny
Yup, you said it. Everything's in there. Just replace every reference to table with guitar . -Vinny
