shakyhands Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 Higuys. Maybe silly question but I am looking at the top of a Fender Stringmaster (steel guitar) pickup and thinking of maybe trying to wind one similar. Now in the middle of the top bobbin flange, there is a small hole in between the two centre pole pieces. Were they put there for wax potting? Can someone tell me size of hole and why its there? Quote
RestorationAD Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 That is where the screw goes to attach the bobbin to the winder. I can't remember how big it is ... I think 1/8" Quote

SwedishLuthier Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Double sided tape is also perfectly fine to attach bobbins to the winder. I use that exclusively. Al tough there is one additional advantage of the hole. If you pot the pickup in hot wax the hole makes it easier for the trapped air to get out and wax to get into the coil. Maybe not an conscious design thing from Leo´s side but nevertheless a distinct feature. Quote
