Levendis
I'm in the process of building a strat type guitar and I can't decide which tremelo bridge to use. I know the obvious differences in the vintage type bridge and the Wilkenson type, but are there any advantages in one over the other? Oh, yeah..Hi..my name is Jerry and I've been lurking here for a while.
Snork
lol welcome to the forums levendis or jerry! well, the response you're going to get here is a floyd rose bridge all the way. because it is a far superior tremelo bridge, but if you want a vintage trem style go with a wilkenson. GuitarMaestro
well, the response you're going to get here is a floyd rose bridge all the way. because it is a far superior tremelo bridge I have to disagree here. The only discipline the floyd is superiour to a usual trem is the tuning stability. Everything else is worse. The handling, the sustain, the sound, the detuning of strings if you bend one string, etc. Sont get me wrong though. I love Floyds, because the simply DONT go out of tune. The drawbacks are not nearly as bad as some people make you believe. But I accept them in order to get absolute tuning stability. BUT I checked a guitar with looking tuners, graphite nut and the Wilkinson trem in a store and I was not able to bring it out of tune easily. It is surely not as tuning stable as Floyds, but if you only use the trem from time to time and dont abuse it too badly, then I would definately recommend the Wilkinsion + locking tuners. Even after some divebombs the tuning was still correct.
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
There's always the flatmount non trem, and of course the Kahler trem

westhemann
i think the wilkinson replacement for thevintage trem has greater mass...so better sustain, etc. over the vintage...but some people prefer the vintage ones too

Levendis
Thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward the Wilkenson, but I'm giving the Floyd Rose a second look. I also want to take the opportunity to thank everyone on the forum and those who authored tutorials on the Project Guitar page. I never would have started any of my projects had it not been for your guidance and advice...thanks!
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
I'd actually say vintage wilkinson and locking tuners, unless there's a humbucker in the bridge. Otherise, it just wont look right.
Scott Rosenberger
The Hipshot bridge is an excellent option. not too expensive either Hipshot
