pikoz Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 hello guys am restoring a vintage univox hi-flier. well the strings at first were very high at the higher frets so i tried shimming it but the right angle makes the strings touch the higher frets. i thought about carving the neck plate and honestly i did some but i need advice here coz am not experienced in this stuff. thx Quote
jbkim Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Wow! I had one of those WAY back when. I wish I still had it . What about truss rod adjustment? Can you explain what you mean by carving the neck plate? I was confused at first by "right angle." At first, I thought you meant perpendicular but then I realized you meant "correct angle." Quote
pikoz Posted January 16, 2004 Author Report Posted January 16, 2004 about this guitar. i think am pretty luck, i found it in an old rental store. it was all painted with some dirty finish even the headstock so there was no sign of the univox logo either, and the folks at the store didn't know its brand so i got it at a pretty low price then removed the dirty finish and working on some adjustments now but the wood and the humbuckers are in gr8 condition. well. ya i meant "correct angle" sorry . about truss rod. i fretted the 1st fret and the 14th fret and the string was making no contact at the 7th but there was a v. small gap ( i read this on one of the tutorials) so i think it needs not adjustment ( or wat?). about carving the neck plate i meant to remove some wood by sanding or any other method to lower the overall level of the neck to the body. i though this might solve it. i already lowered it about 1mm and the strings became lower at the higher frets but not as the ones near the nut. jbkim Posted January 16, 2004 Report Posted January 16, 2004 Ah! Ok. The neck plate is metal (look here) so I was again confused as to how you were going to carve it . I think you mean the neck pocket. Can you raise the bridge? I'd try that before doing something as aggressive as shaving the neck pocket (on such an old guitar .) You can also try a smaller shim. pikoz Posted January 16, 2004 Author Report Posted January 16, 2004 look am new to this business and got no experience. i dont know if the bridge on this guitar can be raised or not without affecting the tonal characterisitics ( see www.univox.org and tell me ) buti know that the ground of the electric circuit is located just under one of the screws of the bridge so i think the bridge must be at the bottom level to be properly connected. anyway you'll find pics of the guitar at the site http://www.univox.org/pics/guitars/hiflier it is phase 4.
