82cabby Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 Hi all- I've got a rookie question... Can a 12 string electric use standard 6 string pickups? I did use the search and struck out... Any insight would be appreciated. Dave Quote
Our Souls inc. Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 *should work fine I have no real experience, but as long as the string spacing isn't too wide, it should work. There may be 'dead' spots, unless you use blade types, but again- I'm just speculating. Quote
82cabby Posted December 30, 2012 Author Report Posted December 30, 2012 The reason I ask is I would like to build a 12 string, and have a 12 string bridge plus two single coils and a humbucker for a 6 string kickin around.... It got me thinkin... Quote
WezV Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 almost* all 12 string electrics use standard 6 string pickups. it works fine. I would avoid high powered pickups, not just because high gain 12 string is an odd concept- but because you have twice as much string movement coming from a 12 string. Low powered pickups always seems to work best on the classic 12 string designs too *i say "almost" because there is the fender electric XII with a different pickup design to most other fenders. but those are not specifically 12 string pickups, leo incorporated the split pickup design on almost all his guitars designed after the stratocaster (With G&L rather than fender) Quote
