Any Have A Baritone 27" Scale Template?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have to slot a board for a build that's getting a 27" scale. I don't generally build baritones so I don't have one, nor do I really feel like shelling out a ton of cash to get one. So I was thinking... anyone wanna lend me their's? I'll obviously cover shipping both ways!

Thoughts?

One thing you might consider - I'm planning to do a baritone build next and I was meaning to use my 25.5' template and just add another fret behind the nut, so to speak. Then I did the math and realized that I'm basically getting 27' that way. Not sure if this is what you'd want, I'll just use my old template and position the nut slot by hand.

I could make you one if my main computer wasn't down, been procrastinating a bit too much and relying on my laptop. Anyway, I get the numbers from the Stewmac fret calculator and then draw the fb template by inputting the numbers in AutoCAD with nutwidth and endwidth. The rest is just making a printout in 1:1 scale on two separate sheets, overlap and tape them together. Then cut out w/ scissors and tape onto proposed fb wood. Then cut initial slots with my jeweller's saw, pull off paper, rub in chalk then slot the proper sized kerf for your frets. Can't get anymore exact when inputting numbers accurate to 1 thou. :)

Hei Chris - if you have a 34" scale you can cheat by going for a 26,986" scale taking the fourth fret of the 34" scale as the nut point of your baritone. I discussed this a while back because I think that unless one is building to perfectly match the scale lengths of "other" manufacturers it is a worthwhile consideration having a pair of templates based off both 35" and 34" scales that extend beyond the two octaves of those bass scales to include both 25,471" (34" at fifth) and 24,749" (35" at sixth) and any other intermediate scale. These are within a 0,02% (0,7mm on total scale length) and 0,0005% (2,5/1000ths of a mm) tolerance of the "original" scales respectively which are close to what any hand-finished instrument can be expected to achieve anyway.

Sorry this isn't targetted specifically to your request however I think it is of relevance nonetheless.

Gah! I do have 34" and 35"... sadly I made them to be only 24 frets! It looks like I'm going to have to make this one too. Was kind of hoping to avoid that as I hate jig building and stuff, especially for something I plan to only use once. Meh, if you see a pic of a scale template up later today, I caved hahaha.

As onerous as the task may be Chris, having them both on hand would serve you better going forward. Since I have a bit of CNC time on my hands I was thinking of cutting templates from something resilient however the guy "in charge" of the CNC will probably not let me cut anything other than wood. A pair of templates based on both 34" and 35" going up to 38,16" and 37,08" respectively.

....was trying to post my Excel data in here but it's throwing me a loop....
