KEA 2015 builds (still dragging on)

Recommended Posts

Funny thing about Finland is that we get service virtually everywhere, even in the really wild nowheres....except for a few miles out of Pori, where there are mystery black holes. Miles deep into a forest? 3G. Off the main road checking out a small house in semi-city rural farmland? Bloop bloop.

You find the craziest top veneers! This is one like a brown kaleidoscope. I see porky pig in his cop hat in there.

SR

It is so much easier to find insanely figured or burled pieces in veneer form for some reason. Even when they have 15 sheets of consecutive matching veneer that would have been 1" thick or more if it haddnt been veneered.

This one should look pretty good. I just hope it doenst lose its depth and grain and get too dark with finish.

It seems to go so much quicker when i scarf and rout truss rods for 3 guitars at once.

The required work to make a couple of guitars at once is basically the same as making only one... I can spend hours to prepare a two minutes routing.

GODDAMNIT LUIS.

Every time you post a new Explorer it remind me how much I want one of yours! Thing is, I can't afford to either buy one (I still think you don't charge enough!) and my personal resources at this end are dedicated purely to developing new tutorial content for the site....making a copy of one of your guitar designs just wouldn't be cool for several reasons.

I need to win big on the Euromillions lotto, buy an old kartano (wooden mansion) by a lake, start a free open-door residental luthiery school and commission you to make me a set of Explorers. If that's fine with you of course Luis.

I thought the walnut burl still looked sweet. And I have never even heard of olive ash till you posted that one earlier in the year. This one is amazing. It looks like one piece.

SR

I hadnt heard of it before i found it online. Apparently it is really rare, because i havn seen it since.

This one is indeed one piece. I Had 1 sheet left. The sheets were huge, like 33" long by 20" wide. I got this strat and an explorer out of hte last sheet.

Let me know if you win that lotto. I'll make you as many as you'd like ;)
Prices are an interesting topic though. My work is by far the best its ever been, and yet, its been really hard to sell my best work even at low prices.

Certainly will on both counts.

You can easily price yourself out of the market at both ends. Don't ask, won't get. Undercutting or undervaluing your work is equally as negative on sales too. People compares apples and oranges based on price if you get what I mean. If I could get one of your finished instruments into a photo studio, I could sell it for four times what you're putting them out at. Didn't a customer do this exact same thing?

Additionally, you are not making your mark. Brand recognition is key to securing more prestige in people's minds. Waterslide decals under lacquer with an alternative for oil would make all the difference. It bothers me so much that you're not raking in the sales, man. Your work and wood choice is getting compliments across the board, but having positive commentary on the process doesn't always translate to somebody slamming money on the table for the finished item. They're going silly for the porn but they're not putting a ring on your finger.

Hell if I had the money I'd have you manufacture these instruments for me at your output price and I'd be making all the money by doing very little work solving the bugs in marketing.

I just hope that the lack of sales influx or good hard money isn't shooting your enthusiasm in the foot Luis. Don't make me come over there and put you to work now!
