2016 Builds Of KEA

Recommended Posts

Here are some pics of it with oil. Really made the figure stand out.
All it needs is the fretwork, which i have absolutely no desire to do right now. Other than that, it is ready to assemble.
On a  side note, I counted all the guitars i have pictures of, and with this one is somewhere around 110. There are about 5 or 6 more that i dont have pictures of because i lost them when my computer crashed. No wonder i am so burned out on this. Think about how much sanding and how many fret slots that is.

Absolute wood porn as usual Luis! I'm curious how you've developed your work around the fingerboard, fret dressing, etc. Everything for you is totally by the numbers and as it should be. How is the detailing and finessing coming along?

Is that a little tearout near the toggle? That's not like you, man.

Man, how can you possibly see that? Did you zoom in? i cant even see it in the pictures.
It isnt really tearout, more like i was widening the hole with a step bit and went into it with the next level.

Oh, on the bevel! I was really wondering, the one on the toggle hole was so microscopic i was thinking you had secret powers i didnt know about. That light spot is actually just the 3dness of the grain. Some parts are really like. No tearout here! I dont allow any trace of it on my bevels, or anywhere.

That and I think we've been discussing your lawn for too many years now also.....!!

Holy crap tho! I don't know where he is in this world but that's some nice grass!!!

Here in Oklahoma we get like 2 months with rain and the rest is dry so there's no way I could get grass to grow that nice, his almost looks like turf it's so perfect lol

Trust me, it is dryer here in NM than it is in oklamhoma! My dad just waters that grass like 3 times a day. Its actually not doing as well as it usually is.

Wow, that's really impressive for New Mexico!

I haven't been there in years but I remember it being dry, we go hunting in western ok pretty close to Nm and it's pretty much like desert over there.

The eastern part of NM is all plains and desert. Other parts are high mountains and super thick green forest. It varies a lot here.

That's similar to how it is here in ok but backwards, west is all dessert, central is all plains and east as you get closer to Arkansas it starts to get into big hills/small mountains.

Anyways it's nice to see another neighbor here, if your ever over in ok give me a holler and I'll get ya a beer.

Havnt bee doing much lately. Still dont have any desire to build.
Tried out a finish on a 7 string i have had sitting here for a while. Would have came out great if this dang UV finsh would lay down anywhere near level. By the time you level it you basically sand through it.

Yup, that is it. I tried for about a year to get it right on many guitars.
I didnt realize that their sealer was absolutely required. When using the the finish straight to the wood it wouldnt adhere at all and would just lift up and chip. The sealer did the job well but the finish itself just is impossible to get level with a brush.

Thanks Scott. That one is sitting in the other garage on our big freezer. Sanded through in a few places and i just dont care about it right now.
Life sure is boring without building, i must say. The past few weeks i have just been cleaning up the shop, planing and gluing my last pieces i had laying around and a few other random things.
Its funny how quickly i lost all desire for guitar stuff. It literally feels like i woke up one day, realized how tired i was of being so stressed about everything always going wrong on them, and never looked back. Before i at least wanted to beat it and bounce back.
But it honestly does feel so relieving. All these years its felt like a massive burden.

I get a little worn out feeling after a long build. But as you say, after a month or so I sure feel at loose ends. With a build going, I always know what I'm going to do next, you know? Sometimes, I substitute a carving project for a guitar and all is good. You should try making something else out of wood or at least something to keep your hands busy. Did you see the puzzle I made my wife out of off-cuts? I bet you've got a bunch of those that need to be turned into something else.

Ive tried doing other little stuff, but it just ends up seeming pointless.
I have decided to fully cut off my building even earlier than i thought.
I will also being be cancelling my business license next month.
Its been fun doing this every single day for the past 11 years. I feel like i had a lot more potential than i actually reached, which i really hate. I did make some dang nice guitars but just couldnt keep it consistent.
And although I am bored out of my mind at home now, it do feel extremely at peace with my decision.

Man, your instruments are among the best I have seen around here. They have a recognizable face too. If building does not earn enough for a living or causes more pain then pleasure, it is OK to quit. But go back to it when you relax, build one or three guitars a year, whatever number is comfortable for you, for someone who really deserves it, not for every paying customer.
