Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
Flame maple, purpleheart, flame maple. Sounds so bright it hurts. Its a pretty thick neck, so I can fix it if thats the problem, but what would you think? I mean acoutically, its loud and banjo esque. Sounds great plugged in, but thats after I put the cheapest muddiest sounding pickup I had in there. Not muddy in this guitar.
GuitarMaestro
What do you think makes this neck especially bright sounding? Your description sound like it is a usual maple neck....
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
I cant explain it very well. I think I should have someone who has heard it try...perhaps the better half

krazyderek
lol neat, i've always found purple heart to have alot of "thunk" and low end, so the brightness must be coming from the Cherry body, i think that's supposed to be kinda bright sounding if i remember correctly, ramparts says it's similar to basswood... I built a neck out of bass/ph/bass wood, w/ ph FB it's light as a feather
westhemann
i don't find cherry to be similar to basswood at all.....it is bright...very much so...basswood is kind of creamy to my ears
krazyderek
interesting, they're description of the sound of cherry led me to beleive the exact oposite...
westhemann
http://www.rampartguitars.com/w_Bo-Do_2.htm they compare it to basswood in a "control" type of manner as in.."compared to basswood it sounds like this...." but trust me...it is QUITE bright
krazyderek
well you're the man with the experience using the wood so i do trust you so basswood is creamy to you? i've always gotten a thin dead vibe from it.. like it would be good for high gain pickups, is my thinking for basswood... sorry, i'm not very wordy goody today... Getting back on subject..... did you try the neck in another body?? that might help you narrow down/ confirm where the brightness is coming from
westhemann
i agree about basswood...thin and dead...but creamy and smooth also but on the carved top the strange brightness is definately the cherry i am very familiar with the sounds of mahogany and maple, and that is the only other woods on that guitar
