Lex Luthier Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Like these? When I was making a violin back in highschool, I made my own out of scrap Maple and I used 1mm scraper blade I machined in my schools wood shop for the blades. What does he use them for in the book? Quote
quito195 Posted January 26, 2004 Author Report Posted January 26, 2004 similar he uses it for top carving and its a plane with a wooden handle stickin out the back those look like they might do it though. Quote
KeithHowell Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Lex How about a drawing and brief tutorial on making one? Keith Quote
tdog Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Stew-Mac sells these planes on page 20 of their catalogue. They are refered to as finger planes. I believe Garrett Wade also stocks them. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Planes.html Quote
Lex Luthier Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Lex How about a drawing and brief tutorial on making one? Keith I'll see what I can do. Quote
KeithHowell Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Great thanks Lex. I have as much fun building my own tools as building guitars. I'm busy getting some bits and pieces together to build a belt and thicknessing sander. Keith Quote
Lex Luthier Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Here is a pic of all three at different anlges, including one disassembled. They are a solid piece of Maple with a "V" shaped slot chiseled out, a small dowel inserted to allow a small wedge to hold the blade like in the diagram I have included. I made three because one has a completely flat sole, another has a curve across the width of the sole, and the other one is curved across the width and lenght of the sole. They are about 1 1/4" in lenght, but you can make them whatever size you need. I found it a better idea to make them then to spend $50 FOR EACH at Lee Valley. Quote
KeithHowell Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 Great! Thanks Lex. Any tips on making the blades? Brian: Can we pin this or move it into the tutorial section? Keith Quote
Lex Luthier Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 I bought a 1mm thickness scraper blade that I cut on a large sheer in the metal shop in my highschool. I then sharped them. That's really all there was to it. The scraper blade I used is TOUGH though, you may have trouble cutting it without proper tools. Quote
