Jdogg
Any chance you could post a photo of the razors you use for the inlay? When the initial route is down I use thee types of razors. One with a sharp tip, hook, and rounded. I'm trying to picture them and not quite getting it.

You recommend any specific combination for the dye? I haven't used dye, I used ebony dust and fine super glue, I've read several posts that recommend leather dye though. ZekeB
So I had an idea to try. I was afraid the gold mother of pearl wood get lost in the zebrawood and I didnt want to use black dye in the epoxy because it's unlikely the route will be perfect. On top of that some of these pieces are tiny so I decided to glue some black fiber cloth around the sides to help with consistency of the inlay and allow me to open up the route a little bit. So far so good. I think it'll clean up well from what I've seen so far.
ZekeB
Here's the dry fit. Black fiber worked really well. Glue tomorrow
ZekeB
Inlaid. Going to bind this with black andput a few coats of tru oil on. I figure it'll be easy to touch up if I'm banging on it with a pick. The pick guard cavity will be routed into the body on a slight angle. Really looking forward to the next part.

ZekeB
Bound the pickguard and did a little spot checking. I'll cut and sand everything flush. And finished. Best inlay so far.

ZekeB
All the ornaments, boards and templates are done. Start cutting the headstock angle and and neck channels next. Some foreshadowing
ZekeB
Ok. Will be approaching the painting process soon. I've been playing around with a few ideas. Just focus on the body. I'll match the headstock with something. I'm still leaning on one but wanted to see what you guys think? 1. Original Black 2. Fancy White 3. Ivory
mistermikev
fancy white is a standout for me. Have new found respect for that color as it's easy to collect all sorts of debri in the finish.
ZekeB
I actually got a solution for that. on the last guitar I went and got a tent at academy where I can isolate everything from the garage. I put a fan on the inside so it pulls everything out the a screen. The inlet has a screen to so its pretty clean environment.
mistermikev
sounds like a good solution. I was thinking that on my next white or cream build I'll buy a throw away garment bag and rig up the guitar inside that. for the blonde, I used a large plastic bin and it worked fairly well. Afterwards (with just one guitar) the inside was caked with nitro and I really don't want that hanging round my house. I was doing this all outside and when the wind would pick up - just couldn't spray. we have a lot of sand in the air here.
ADFinlayson
it's cream and gold for me out of those What wood are you using, natural finish maple cap an option?
ZekeB
It's a neckthrough that goes to the top so its the laminate wood and mahogany
ZekeB
Cut the horizontal profile. The fretboard is going to sit in a slight cavity in the body. Most of the sides will be gone when the vertical profile is cut but right now they're acting as buffers in case something slips . Here's how it went down. Put the fretboard template where it will go, outlined and carved it out with a chisel, square ruler and a razor. Didn't have a scraper small enough so I actually used the ruler edge. I used the ruler to plunge into the carve to be my gauge for the depth and carved to that point to make sure i didn't go too far. When I got the right angle I just took my time to get the edges right for the fit and used the ruler edge to clean and level what was left.

ZekeB
Sorry haven't updated in a while. Lots of really helpful things on this one. By far the biggest improvement was making a fretboard template and centering everything off of that. Put tape around the template to make sure the fretboard will fit nicely and snug

ZekeB
Cut the fretboard to size and ended binding it since the inlay was hitting side. Had a little tearout on headstock plate and will finish that tomorrow. Control cavity is routed and pilot holes for controls are made. Here's my test fit to make sure my centers are still good and see the progress. Going to route the inlay the pickguard next.
