Having a go at my own build series

Recommended Posts

There's something fishy with some of your Google content. I first thought I could see all images but these two don't open in your post:

kuva.png.06b3fde5581ceb77e7c9699471f00619.png

I could have copied the actual links but they were several lines long. If I inspect the properties of those, there's a broken band icon instead of a preview. Opening the address in a new tab requires me to sign in to Google but if I do I get a "Do Not Enter" icon.

The video you posted on September 6th does the same. It used to work for me when you posted it. Earlier vids in this thread seem to work, though.

That video still works fine on mine but the missing three photos in the recent post are still missing.  Curious!

Yeah I'm not sure why it's happening. All the photos in this thread are on the same public/shared google photos album but some of the photos don't have public read permissions and I can't seem to find any option to alter perms on individual photos.

Finally got round to putting the other one together, had a right ball ache getting the pickups to fit (SD vintage blues), I ended up taking a dremel to the pole screws on the neck so it didn't foul the tennon.

And I went almost exclusively with braided wire this time

Some festive glam pics below, annoyingly I've just missed the cut off for GTOM. You will see on the back, I need to get myself some swirl remover, but it's mostly good.

Tidy work, very well executed :thumb:

If I could make only one eensy weensy hair-splitting suggestion it would be to lower the two pots a tad into the body so there's less of a gap under the knobs. Otherwise you're well within your rights to tell me to sod off :D

I've had to snip off the ends of the slugs on a couple of builds too. Invariably it's due to me wanting to direct mount the pickups into the body, but for some silly reason some pickup manufacturers insist on making the slugs protrude deeper than the mounting ears.

Fair point, to start with I had them much closer to the body but found them impossible to turn due to the awkward shape of the knobs, so I had to make the cavity deeper. Now they stick out a bit further but I can get my fingers under the edge of them for quick adjustments. I don't like these knobs, first and last time I'll use them. I'm struggling with pots and knobs tbh. I want pots that are imperial and low friction - The only ones I've found where I like the friction are Bourns but they're metric and I haven't found any metric knobs that I like the look of. Any suggestions welcome!

I think these pickups must be solely designed for thicker body les pauls etc, these pole screws were sticking a good 15mm out of the bottom

Bourns come in both 1/4" and 6mm shafts. I've got a stack of imperial Bourns 500K pots over here.

https://www.bourns.com/docs/product-datasheets/PDB241-GTR.pdf

The first two digits in the product code following the 'GTR' bit defines whether it's a 6mm knurled shaft or 1/4" plain shaft - you want either the 02 (shart shaft) or 04 (long shaft) variant. You should be able to get them easily and in bulk from electronics wholesalers like Farnell, Mouser or Digikey.

Just had a look through that spec sheet and the 3 websites. Useful links sites but those are metric pots in the bourns specsheet with the 6mm split shaft. I don't think Bourns do an imperial pots, not that I can find anyway. Annoying because they're exactly what I want in terms of friction

It's hidden in the datasheet. Just because the primary image only shows the knulred shaft doesn't mean it's the only option in the series:

I saw that but that is referencing the plain shaft pot, is a knurled 6.3mm knob going to fit on a plain shaft knob properly?

Knurled shaft pots/knobs should be 6mm (metric) only, with either 18-tooth or 24-tooth splines. I've never heard of a knurled shaft with an imperial diameter.

Plain shaft with 6mm is sometimes possible, but rarely found. 1/4" is the most common, with or without a flattened section ('D' shaft)
