StreamLine
i am now finishing my guitar neck with varnish 50/50=ied with cellulose thinner, as i was advised to do by a local luthier...... its coming out great..... http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/attac...&postid=1017395 BUT i did not cover frets and the brass nut....... i thought the varnish mixture will just not affect them, stupid, i know..... anyway, frets and nut are now sticky, what do i do? what should i do to prevent th8is happening again? (i apply the stuff with a brush)......... how do i 'undo' this? or just keep the stuff on, and polish it out on frets too, if its no biggie? help!!!! westhemann
sorry i am not familiar with thinning varnish with cellulose thinner....and really there are so many types of varnish.
westhemann
i moved this to the finishing section because some of the major finishing guys don't read through the solid body section and i want you to get some good responses
StreamLine
ok, i see........ but i think you still could help when you finish fretboards / necks, do you cover up frets? or not? can the varnish be just taken off later (as in off of frets)? westhemann
i have heard many say that nitro comes right off of frets...i do not know about varnish...but logic says that you would finish the whole thing and then carefully scrape it off the frets that is all i know and that is what i am doing with mine hope it helps....i don't know where all the finishing guys are right now
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
I would just redo tyhe frets, because the varnish wont dry evenly anyway.
westhemann
I would just redo tyhe frets, because the varnish wont dry evenly anyway. umm...i hope you don't mean refretting? i would think that would cause more work and potential tearout and marring of the finish would really be something i would worry about
StreamLine
yeah i had a look, it comes right off with a bit of scratching with my nails.... phew btw its fully scalloped, so refret is really NOT an option and Wes, thanks,
syxxstring
Fender finishes over the frets, and then does a poor job of cleaning it up. Brian posted some info on this not too far back. I was looking at my custom shop strat and noticed even on this there is a lot of nitro residue on the frets.
