Igzie
Hi, There is a large diameter birch tree that has died close to my property. The municipality will cut and remove it. It died this winter or spring. Could the wood be used for guitar bodies?
Bizman62
Of course it can be used for guitars. Not only bodies, necks as well. Ruokangas use quite a lot of birch for their guitars. For what I've heard from a luthier school classmate of Mr. Ruokangas, the "Arctic" is mostly for marketing purposes although fancy figuration can have an effect to the sonic vibrations inside a block of wood. Birch is pretty hard and heavy, pale in colour, much similar to maple but a bit more coarse. Relatively nice to work, non-poisonous etc. So yes, quarter saw planks out of the tree, let them dry properly piled with slats between outside in a windy shadow under weight and in a decade or so you'll have a nice pile of good wood for many projects.
