Bolting on a neck

Recommended Posts

I am going to bolt the neck on tommorow hopefully, if the hand held router gets returned to my wood shop, but this is how i was going to do it:

Route the neck pocket so the neck site flush, then drill the 4 holes through it and into the neck, then i was going to put wood glue on it too, since i wont be removing the neck, or should i not use wood glue?

Also, will and screws work? or do they have to be special ones?

Thanks

Curtis

well you should know to post earlier if you want a couple of posts under your belt before you decide on something and do it...

I honestly don't know why the standard screws are so big, just that they usualy are compared to your normal wood screws.

if you're already going to have screws in there not much point of using glue too, i'd say pick one, and if you don't have the right screws on hand, i'd go with glue, provided you know you've done everything right, ie: pocket depth, a good tight fit, angle, and that you have a couple of good short and strong clamps

just my opinion to help ya out if you absolutely have to do it tomorow

assuming the neck pocket is standard to something or another(strat or otherwise), MAKE SURE you have the pocket size and depth correct. I also assume that the truss rod access is at the headstock not the body. If at the body, gluing on the neck isn't too smart...

Also, if necessary, check the neck angle in accordance with the bridge.

Good Luck!

PS if you decide to go with a design that would require taking the neck off and putting it back on multiple times, have you considered using threaded inserts?

I was at ACE Hardware the other day and I picked up a couple of these nifty things called Trim Screws. They're 1 1/4" long and actually come with a ferrule type thing. I put 5 of them into my bass to mount the neck and it works fine, they're about 1/8 - 3/16" wide. $.50 a piece so not bad.

I know that fender just screws it into the wood of the neck pocket, but I have a westone that plays awesome and never gets out of adjustment and I noticed they used threaded inserts. Like these from Workshop Supply.. I think it would hold better and keep the neck from shifting which is what a Fender guitar will do in some cases.

i aint goin to glue it just yet, but some chick was usin the hand router, so i couldnt route today, i definetly get it tommorow, then i am using Allen head bolts with dowels around them (the dowels are hollowed out and have 2 nuts super glued in there) it should work pretty good then, either that or flat head screws that just go in, i will of course drill a pilot hole

The westone guitar has the threaded inserts in the neck, sorry if I mislead anyone by my other statement. It's the type that you screw down with a hex bolt and has regular threads in the inside. I've had to do a number of neck realignments on fender style guitars, and it just seems like the Westone guitar never messes up. So the newest guitar I make will have them in it.
