Couple superstrats coming along

Recommended Posts

Sanded the green back to 320 grit, dyed again with less blotchiness, shellac and couple coats of oil on now.

The ss frets I got from my friend for the guitar were ready cut pieces with no radius. Hmm. Let's see how a small amount of Titebond on the tang plus clamps for 30 minutes works. So far so good, pretty slow going though.

Instead of having sucked the green out I'd rather say that the shellac enhanced the browns which already can be seen in previous pictures. Nonetheless the looks got more organic, somehow it reminds me of early fall, the time of harvesting vegetables. Frostbitten potato leaves and such...

If the dye is soluble in alcohol, the alcohol in the shellac will re-mobilise it pretty easily, yeah. Ideally dye needs to be shot over with a sealer coat rather than it being hand-applied. If it absolutely has to be rubbed, fast swipes of something like a 1-1/2lb cut can get shellac on there enough to maintain the dye. Just don't repeat swipes over the same area. Once the second application is going on, pretty much do the same to not burn through. It's pretty tricky.

Haven't updated this build in a while, but made steady progress regadless. :)

Frets installed, neck shaped and dyed. Shellac plus three coats of oil, logo done and 10 coats of nitro sprayed. Now we wait. 🥱20211017_122817.thumb.jpg.23cecacb9dd0b2d877f4e190e99dce43.jpg

The way shellac enhances the grain is really hard to capture on photos, it glimmers in a 3D way.

Nitro went pretty well, not much sanding to do before final polish.

looks good.  that logo... it's very fine afa detail.  did you do it with "laser beams" or is that waterslide or perhaps silk screen?  the fine detail of it is very nice.

I'm liking the pink. Angelus rose and light rose are great colours, I use the light rose a lot over yellow to make a much more interesting orange than just orange because you get pinks, yellow and orange depending on how you look at it, works particularly well if you use a water based yellow as they don't mix as well.

What sort of lacquer is going over the dye? If it's nitro then I would think that there would be a very slight contribution of yellow to the dyed colour, making the pink slightly warmer, but certainly not peach (maybe in 20-30yrs!). Also, where are you sourcing your nitro? Here or elsewhere in the EU?
