Devon Headen Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 I'm trying to come up with a good veneer to contrast with purpleheart for my guitar. It's gonna be a 3 piece purpleheart laminate with veneer in between to contrast, then possibly more veneer (opposite shade of what's on the neck possibly), with purpleheart wings/mahongany back. The fretboard will be bocote. Anyway, my question is: should I use light (maple) or dark (walnut) veneer on the neck? Also, should I use the opposite or the same wood veneer before the wings? Thanks, Devon Quote
Brian Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 I like the light-dark-light contrast myself Quote
tdog Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I'd go with a Birds Eye Maple veneer to compliment the purpleheart......It will add a nice contrast. Quote
Devon Headen Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 Maple it is. Ordering it now. Just a tip, looking for veneers, the cheapest place I have found them is www.rockler.com . Good prices over there . Devon Quote
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 That will weigh a TON. Good luck tho. I wanna see it. Quote
Devon Headen Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 That will weigh a TON. Good luck tho. I wanna see it. That it will...The top is gonna be only about 3/4" thick (gotta plane some twist out of the 1" board), but the neck is gonna be about 1 3/4" and go through the whole body. I started drawing up plans last night. This think is really gonna look good I think Quote
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Shall look killer tho. Quote
mullmuzzler Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I'd go with a Birds Eye Maple veneer to compliment the purpleheart......It will add a nice contrast. You should check out Conklin Guitars site just for the refference for the maple-purpleheart contrast on the 7 and 8 string axes. VERY NICE, VERY NICE INDEED!!! mullmuzzler | OSSMT Quote
mullmuzzler Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 BTW, how much is purpleheart and where can I find some? mullmuzzler | OSSMT Quote
Devon Headen Posted February 18, 2004 Author Report Posted February 18, 2004 Purpleheart isn't all that expensive...it's actually really cheap next ot other exotics. I bought mine from this guy but I got it from eBay. Good guy to deal with, haven't really checked out his site though. I do know that he kiln dries all of his wood. My purpleheart has a bit a a twist though, but overall I'm satisfied. Enjoy Devon Quote
