Devon Headen
I'm trying to come up with a good veneer to contrast with purpleheart for my guitar. It's gonna be a 3 piece purpleheart laminate with veneer in between to contrast, then possibly more veneer (opposite shade of what's on the neck possibly), with purpleheart wings/mahongany back. The fretboard will be bocote. Anyway, my question is: should I use light (maple) or dark (walnut) veneer on the neck? Also, should I use the opposite or the same wood veneer before the wings? Thanks, Devon
Brian
I like the light-dark-light contrast myself
tdog
I'd go with a Birds Eye Maple veneer to compliment the purpleheart......It will add a nice contrast.
Devon Headen
Maple it is. Ordering it now. Just a tip, looking for veneers, the cheapest place I have found them is www.rockler.com . Good prices over there . Devon

Devon Headen
That will weigh a TON. Good luck tho. I wanna see it. That it will...The top is gonna be only about 3/4" thick (gotta plane some twist out of the 1" board), but the neck is gonna be about 1 3/4" and go through the whole body. I started drawing up plans last night. This think is really gonna look good I think

mullmuzzler
I'd go with a Birds Eye Maple veneer to compliment the purpleheart......It will add a nice contrast. You should check out Conklin Guitars site just for the refference for the maple-purpleheart contrast on the 7 and 8 string axes. VERY NICE, VERY NICE INDEED!!! mullmuzzler | OSSMT
mullmuzzler
BTW, how much is purpleheart and where can I find some? mullmuzzler | OSSMT
Devon Headen
Purpleheart isn't all that expensive...it's actually really cheap next ot other exotics. I bought mine from this guy but I got it from eBay. Good guy to deal with, haven't really checked out his site though. I do know that he kiln dries all of his wood. My purpleheart has a bit a a twist though, but overall I'm satisfied. Enjoy Devon
