Rogviler Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 I've noticed that several guitar manufacturers are making guitars with hidden pickups, i.e. the pickups are buried inside the body so the top is nice and clean... So how close to the surface of the wood does one need to place the pickup for it to still work properly? Also, would a cover (going under the strings, on top of the pickup) made out of 1/16 " brass affect the function of the pickup any? Thanks. Quote
Brian Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 My thoughts are that Brass being a metal would interfer with the magnetic field of the pickup where as wood has little or no effect.. Quote
darren wilson Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Which guitar manufacturers are putting magnetic pickups inside the body? Quote
Brian Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Fender has one out now, I don't remember the model but I do remember the conversation Quote
BLS Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 http://www.line6.com/variax/US/ i still wonder how this thing works... Quote
darren wilson Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 I know a couple of manufacturers have put "dummy coils" inside their guitars purely for cancelling the hum from single coil pickups. They don't generate any sound on their own. But i've never heard of working magnetic pickups being buried within the body. They wouldn't pick up anything unless they used some REALLY powerful magnets. The Line 6 Variax uses a piezo bridge and digital modelling. It doesn't have magnetic pickups at all. Quote
krazyderek Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 i've played around with the idea of hiding the pickups so that i face was left smooth for graphics... but you'd have to have the bridge sooo low, your pick and fingers would rub against the wood quite a bit i think, even with some kinda funky carve... i duno... still might try it though.. but i've always been planning on using high output pickups Quote
westhemann Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 i like the way pickups look...i think with covers they really look sweet. i wish emg would offer more than just black and white though Quote
darren wilson Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 i like the way pickups look...i think with covers they really look sweet. i wish emg would offer more than just black and white though Some of their models are also available in cream. And you can paint them with some tough enamel. Quote
krazyderek Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 And you can paint them with some tough enamel. then you lose the logo,, and unless your doing the whole guitar, it's kinda time consuming to paint just the pickups (and get them to turn out nice), when compared to the seconds it would take emg to epoxy a different colour cover on during production... Rogviler Posted April 3, 2004 Author Report Posted April 3, 2004 i like the way pickups look...i think with covers they really look sweet. Yeah, but they've been done to death. It's about time someone started doing something a little different. I guess if I figure it out then I'll tell you all about it... Thanks for the replies. Quote
Brian Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 If you want the Wooden Bobbin look I have a solution for you Quote
Bigtommyb Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Ive been playing with the idea of hidden pickups and thought of using plastic covers, ive tested it and putting anything Wood/plastic over it makes very little difference. The only problem is playing it would be pretty hard as there is no room under the strings if you want the pickups to work properly... Big Tom P.S. yes im back and finally i can afford to make my guitar Woohoo go me! will post info as i start making... just gotta wait 4 the wood to arrive and get my final designs done and will probably come asking for help when something goes horribly wrong.... rob Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Fender have already tryed this, and scrapped it after the first few made, because the out put was sooooo weak. Im not saying that it wouldnt work, just you would need massivly high output pickups for it to work, motherbuckers are pretty high in that stake right? Quote
spirit Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 you could use motherbuckers (made by kent armstrong if you don't know) and a built in preamp, like in active guitars, to boost the signal some more. Quote
BLS Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 i like the way pickups look...i think with covers they really look sweet. i wish emg would offer more than just black and white though Ive seen a few silver EMG's on ebay also Quote
