themikestro
Question, I have a bolt on paddle neck that i'm going to fit to the body I'm currently working on and I've got a bit of a worry..... I'm using a Gibson style compensated stop tail bridge with a height of about 15.5mm and the neck is something like 27mm (inlcuding frets) at the body end... I'm not sure about using a neck angle because of the bolt on thing, but i'm worried that the neck isn't going to sit deep enough in the body for good support. I think thats the correct dimesions but i'm at work so I can't check it! Has anyone else experianced a problem with this kind of thing? Should I just recess the bridge by a couple of mm, that wouldn't be too tough. It's only my second guitar so i'm still semi clueless! Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
The neck needs to be angled 3 to 5 degrees. Or like you said you could recess it. I think recesses look classy, when ron cleanlt of course.
spirit
How does one recess a tune-o-matic or a stop tail anyway? I understand the concept, just not how it's done.
Rogviler
How does one recess a tune-o-matic or a stop tail anyway? I understand the concept, just not how it's done. I'm not sure if this is the right way, or if this is even what's meant by 'recess', but when I did it I drilled a hole the size of the top part of a stud (where there's a little 'lip') about 1/8" deep, then drilled holes for the studs, so there's a little recessed area for the wide part of the stud to fit down into, if that makes sense. How deep you go will vary of course, I was only able to lower it 1/8", before the bridge would've touched the body, but that's all I needed. I imagine you could rout or carve a slot for the bridge if you needed it lower...
Devon Headen
You can recess the TOM, but personally, I like the feel of an angled neck better. It feels more comfortable in the 1-5 fret range.

themikestro
Cheers for the advice everyone, the "recess" I had in mind was only about 3mm to stop it looking too weird. Regarding a neck angle though, is it easily done with a bolt on? Or are there issues with the screws going in at an angle? I just don't want the neck join to be too weak really........... I was thinking of routing flat but deeper than needed and gluing in a thin wedge of offcut for the angle, is this a bad idea I wonder...? Everything has gone smoothly up to this point so I don't wanna mess this up!
joris
second try to post the image. Don't worry about drilling the holes. Drill the holes in the body first. Than line-up your neck. Clamp it and drille the neck holes. I think it wil work. Put a tape marker on the drill bit, to prevent you of drilling through the neck.
