depends,

what kind of tone do you want, and what kind of tools do you have to work with?

alot of people make stuff out of mahogony, its mid-lo priced and has a great tone, good to work with too.

if you wanted to go lower than that, pine, oak, cheap maple, stuff at home depot maybe. but thats absolute bottom end budget.

Rosewood is good, maple is good, all you need is a durable, hard wood. Some people on this site have used teak or beech, so don't let the standard woods limit you! Experiment!

For the body, mahogany usually sound good with a maple neck. For both looks and affordability, that combo is usually a good bet.
