imikeyi Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 Hi My question is straight forward Do 250K pots kill off 'EVH' style harmonics? If so, should I switch my tone pot to 500K, or my volume to 500K or both? Thanks! Quote
Joey Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 I really dont think they kill the harmonics at all. 250K pots just warm up the sound a little b/c they reduce some high frequencies a little, but it wont cut off the harmonics. They might not scream as wildly though. Quote
lovekraft Posted May 22, 2004 Report Posted May 22, 2004 It depends on what you need - if you need more highs, go to a 500K, or a "no-load" tone pot. EVH style harmonics are more about technique and power amp compression than anything inside your guitar. Quote
imikeyi Posted May 22, 2004 Author Report Posted May 22, 2004 ok thanks the reason im asking is because my 22 fret strat with 250K pots doesnt get any harmonics compared to my 24fret charvel with 500Ks. And I'm trying to determine if the reason is JUST because of the humbucker (Pearly Gates vs Custom Custom) or also because of the pots. Quote
nonamemx Posted May 23, 2004 Report Posted May 23, 2004 well, the Pearly Gates isn't much of a squealer, it has a deliberate low output to better match volumes with single coils. The Custom Custom, however, is modeled after the pickup Eddie Van Halen handwound himself. I'm thinking that is the root of the problem. I also believe that 500K pots would help, especially if your using humbuckers. Quote
imikeyi Posted May 23, 2004 Author Report Posted May 23, 2004 Really, I did not know that about the Pearly Gates. Makes sense though, because it came stock in a fat strat Thanks Quote
Scott Rosenberger Posted May 23, 2004 Report Posted May 23, 2004 Put a 1 meg pot on it, then come back and thank me later for telling you to do it Quote
