nsherman2006
Ok. I have decided to go with the f200, but i have decided not to draw out a full set of plans because i'm lazy. I'm just going to chop wood and see what happens Actually, i just downloaded a cad drawing and printed it out full-size. Either today or tomorrow i will start working with some cherry scraps with the school bandsaw. I have some assistance from a teacher. This weekend i am going out to buy the real wood for the guitar. Going to a local hardwood store, what can i expect to pay for all the wood needed to make a guitar? I want to do a natural finish, so it cant be too bad looking, but i'm not doing any kind of exquisite top on this one. So basically i just need some good quality wood, at a reasonable price. Anyone have a rough estimate/wood suggestion? Also, besides the what mistakes to avoid thread and the tutorials and obvious stuff (time, patience, luck, insane amount of skill/devotion ability to turn wood into guitar), what is some advice to give to a newbie. My plans are as follows: 1.buy wood 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,etc... build guitar 10. choose color to stain guitar 11.buy all necessary supplies 12. finish guitar 13. put led's in guitar (my endeavor) 14. play guitar sound good, beside the fact that i skipped lots of stuff? Thanks for your help, it really is appreciated. Neal
westhemann
sounds like you have it under control.....if you hit any snags or have a question...feel free to p.m. me if you like just pick the wood you think will fit the guitar you want...i think a walnut body and maple neck would look great with the f shape if you shop carefully you can get all the wood you need for about $

nsherman2006
Hey, you stole my idea I was thinking either mahogany or walnut w/ maple too, but i'll do a little more research and pricing before i make any set plans. The one thing i was worried about is the fact that i'm putting in led's, and it would be good to match it to the color of the body, but maybe i could get white ones. Thanks. nsherman2006
ok, after doing lots of looking around and pricing and such, i have decided to totally change what i was going to do in terms of wood, and now i am planning to do a 2 pc. lacewood body with a padauk neck and a lacewood fingerboard and red/orange led's(depending on what the color of the padauk is. My question is, would it be easier, instead of doing a neckthru, to make the neck run through the body an inch deep, almost like a deep tenon routed all the way through the top of the guitar. This way, i figure it will be easier to shape the neck as it will be much closer to final thickness than a 2" thick piece of wood. So, instead of being a true neck-thru, i would have a 1" deep tenon running all the way down the top of the guitar for the neck, which at the joint with the body will be 1" thick. Or would it be easier to do a neck-thru? Thanks for your help. Neal

Tezifon
with the neckthru you need less routing..
litchfield
What you are considering would be easier in most areas. making sure you rout centered and just wide enough will bw haerder than just gluing on wings
Andreas
If you make an inch deep wont you rout out the wood of the long tenon for the pickups? If that happenes then the tenon needs to be up to your first pickup (the closer to the neck) since it has no need to be this long, unless the look of a neckthrough is required that I guess two veneeres of the same wood (kind of rectangular inlays) would do the job. skibum5545
Seems like a neckthru would be easier. More wood around the heel area would be nice in terms of getting the benefits of the neck-thru heel. Centering would be easier also. Also, how is lacewood for a fb?
