ODavidIsCoolO Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I am rebuilding my old lp guitar and i dont know how to wire any of the electronics but i know i could find a book or something so should i try it myself when i have no backround in electronics or should i pay for a guitar shop to do it for me and if i am doing it myself what major tools will i need Quote
Devon Headen Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 You should do it yourself. Mostly all you need to do, is read a lot about electronics, make sure you understand it, and practice fast clean solder joints. The only tools you need are little things like a soldering iron, needlenose pliers, and maybe some aligator clips. Quote
stageleft Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 I have to agree with the above. there are any number of books specifically on guitar electronics, sit down with one of those and you should have enough of an understanding to dive in. Its not hard at all, you just need to keep track of where everything is going and make good clean solder joints. Practice makes perfect. George Quote
GregP Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 Of all the things you can do to modify your guitar, changing the electronics is one of the easiest to do on your own. I suck, and had some pretty crappy soldering, but the end result was still plenty usable; and though I'm still I'm not happy with it, I know I can always go back and give it a second shot. Quote
skibum5545 Posted June 3, 2004 Report Posted June 3, 2004 There are ways to make it easier on yourself. For instance, EMG pickups come pretty much prewired. Also, if you make a template of your control configuration, you can wire it up there, drop it into to cavity, and just have to clean up a few loose ends in the cavity itself. But DEFINITELY do it yourself. Guitarelectronics.com has every possible wiring configuration you could possibly dream of. Good luck! Quote
ODavidIsCoolO Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 Alright thank you i think we have a souldering iron in the garage somewhere i think i will pick up a book and practice then try it myself i wanted to do as much of the guitar by myself if i could so i could say that i did it all, not picked the parts and had someone do it for me Quote
ansil Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 if you have the means and decide to go with a complex wiring then it is best to have all main points come to a board wire off of that. this will help you greatly in the long run, but if its a simple wiring job then point to point is best. Quote
