jbkim
Poplar is considered a cheap wood but I've said it before here, my sweetest sounding guitar is poplar bodied. I agree with westhemann, a maple capped poplar would probably sound quite good. Don't mind me. My girlfriend is out of town and I'm drunk as hell . Drak
Poplar with an Eastern Hardrock Birdseye Maple top would sound better than the Western Big Leaf Quilted Maple I think. I have a Tele right here I'm building now that's -exactly- what you described, chambered too, it's OK, but not as resonant and 'ringy' a body as some good Mahogony or Walnut. I might be doing some finishing work to it today actually. I think some Birdseye would brighten it up. If you look, you can find birdseye that's almost as highly figured as quilted, sometimes even better, birdseye has a different pattern, but you have to find a good, mineral-streak free piece. They're out there, there are some guys on e-Bay that have great birdseye boards, but you have to pick out the ones that are mineral-streak free or pick a piece where the streaks will work 'for' you. Eastern Hardrock Birdseye Maple is MUCH brighter and harder and 'ringy' than Western Quilted.
