4twenty Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 I'm planning to use a 25 1/2" scale neck from an old ibanez though i'm not sure what model. Firstly the neck has a 41mm (1 5/8") nut, would this be compatible with a strat style non tremelo bridge? is it possible to make the guitar a 24 3/4" scale with a 25 1/2" neck by putting the bridge closer? Also the nut is a locking type, would it be possible/better to change this to a normal graphite/tusq nut? Thanks Quote
westhemann Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 is it possible to make the guitar a 24 3/4" scale with a 25 1/2" neck by putting the bridge closer? no it is not...you should read around the site and learn a little bit about guitars before making any modifications like that.that will render your guitar useless for ever being in tune Firstly the neck has a 41mm (1 5/8") nut, would this be compatible with a strat style non tremelo bridge? the width of the nut has nothing to do with it's compatibility with the bridge...but you said it is a locking nut,so you will not be able to lock it without fine tuners at the bridge Also the nut is a locking type, would it be possible/better to change this to a normal graphite/tusq nut? it is possible...and if you are going to use a fixed bridge, then a normal nut would look better...but you COULD use one of these and then you could stick with the nut you have and be able to lock it Quote
4twenty Posted June 21, 2004 Author Report Posted June 21, 2004 Well i'm not planning to lock the nut since i'm either going to use a non trem strat style bridge or a tuneomatic with a stop tail. Would it be a good idea to change to a normal nut? Apart from the aesthetics are normal nuts superior in any way? Quote

Devon Headen Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 The tone is a little bit different. Not much. In fact I can't really tell a difference, but others say they can. Not necessarily better or worse, just different. You can try it both ways and pick your favorite, or you could just leave the locking nut and not even worry about it. Quote
westhemann Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 well...roundwound strings tend to catch on the locking nut because of the v shape of the slots...making tuning "through the nut" difficult and imprecise...so yes,for that reason,"normal" nuts are superior when all your tuners are on the headstock Quote
