ShreddyKrueger
Does anybody know if a pickup cover is neccisary for a PAF copy, of could i just take it off? and if i can, how would i go about doing so?
nonamemx
No its not needed. I haven't ever taken one off, but I think all you have to do is unscrew the pole pieces, and somehow work it off I think it will be gummed up with wax and will stick. Jon Bell
I've done this on a few guitars. Once the cover comes off, the pickup will be coated in wax. There are several ways to remove it. Sometimes you can be lucky and all the wax will comes off with the cover but other times the pickup will be totally encased in wax.
speedy
i would let it on a paf copy, cos i read that it ""sounds"" i mean it is in the magnetic field and the magnetic field is not so with it as without. perhaps somebopdy knows what i mean keep on rockin'
Jon Bell
Yeah the sound will change a bit if you remove the cover. It won't neccessarily make it sound worse just slightly different.
jefm
You shouldn't have to do anything with the pole pieces... a lot of the time it's solder holding it on (or sometimes nothing....) I had a tough time with the solder...the wax potting and the metal from the PU itself acts like a heatsink....I used braid to get as much off as possible then pried with a screwdriver to crack the joint.... the wax in mine was basically a solid cube...I took most of it off with a hairdryer (careful it splashes ALL OVER)
