Using half a pencil too trace?

I read in a tutorial on making templates that this guy sanded a pencil in half to trace the guitar accuritly i.e. to keep the pencil flush at all times. My question is do you just stick some tape on the side so that the led doesnt rub onto the finished guitar your tracing?

I think that's taking things way further than necessary. I've traced guitar bodies for years and use anything around..pen, pencil, anything works if you watch what your doing and are consistent and smooth.

yes, a peice scotch tape, or really any tape at all will do,
