68 lost souls Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Im thinking of making my neckthrough out of a Goncalo alves neck with mahogany wings. I want to finish it using the gibson voodoo finish so Im going to put a top of swamp ash on it and also to hide the two tone wood at the back Ill put another laminate of swamp ash. My quesion is what thickness should I use for things. I was thinking of 1 1/2" mahogany with the laminates being 1/4" . That would meen that the goncalo alves (the neck) will only be 1 1/2" through the body. Is that thick enough? Have you got any other suggestions that would help? Thanks Quote
SonofaMesa Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Itd be thicker than a SG. Me thinks about as thick as a Les Paul. On the other hand, you may want to take measures to limit the neck angle. As I recall, I took .5 in off of my most recent project. That plus about an inch for neck thickness leaves about nothing. If you are good that may be enough. Still, Id probably consider using a fender bridge or recessing a tune o matic. Quote
68 lost souls Posted July 25, 2004 Author Report Posted July 25, 2004 Im putting in a floyd. I think that should cover the neck angle otherwise ill just cut the neck at an angle. And I was planning on recessing the floyd. Also would it be ok then to make the mahogany 1 1/4" so as to make the body the standard 1 3/4" thickness. Will push pull pots fit in a 1 3?4" body? Quote
SonofaMesa Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 You need to run the numbers for neck angle before you can tell. Im not familiar with the height of a Floyd, so I cant say. There are threads here and there are resources online. Use them and see if you can get your guitar without a neck angle. It may be difficult or simply not worth it to recess, depending on your situation. Its ok to have the neck too thick and have to chop some off. Whn you are shaping the neck, youll appreciate the lee-way. At least I did. Overall, my guess is that 1.25 is too small. Quote
68 lost souls Posted July 29, 2004 Author Report Posted July 29, 2004 Ok changed the idea a bit. If I make the laminates out of bookmatched swamp ash with them being 1/8" each that would leave the body 1 1/2" thick which is also the thickness for the neckpart going through the body will it be thick enough and strong enough at the neck/wing joint of the body? Also a little off topic would the 1/8" wood be thick enough for a voodoo finish? Quote
