davros Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 Well, after much searching, i've found that mineral spirits is good ol' white spirit over here, after bemusing the people who work in B&Q! So...has anyone tried wet sanding with it instead of water to prevent the wood underneath swelling? I'm using plain old halfords car clear acrylic lacquer and I was wondering whether wet sanding with a solvent will dissolve the finish??? I'm probably being stupid! Also...i've also read about using 'naptha'... what's that translate as? Terpentine?Thinners? Meths? Quote
PaulNeeds Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 naptha is, I believe, Zippo type lighter fluid. Quote
68 lost souls Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 Yep thats what I was told on another forum. Its supposed to be great for removing oil on woods such as guncalo alvez that are too oily to glue. Quote
68 lost souls Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 To remove the oils? If thats what you mean, and acetone is what I thik it is (a product name) me thinks they dont sell it in Ireland EDIT: Ok had a look around and have come to the conclusion that there basicly the same thing. Quote
Dr. Jabsco Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 ok thanks. Ive always wanted to go to Ireland, looks like a real beutiful place. Quote
davros Posted July 27, 2004 Author Report Posted July 27, 2004 Ah...lighter fluid! Acetone is nail polish remover, and i wouldn't use that on painted finishes, it'd probably strip it straight off! Quote
kench Posted December 14, 2004 Report Posted December 14, 2004 Acetone is great for removing Super Glue or CA glue. Even from your hands. The thinners and alcohol dont work at all. But I am also wondering if the NAPHTHA used on finishing, is exactly the same thing with the Zippo fluid? Zippo contents are: Petroleum Distillate and Naphtha. I have zippo fluid but I can't find naphtha solvent here, probably because i don't know what to search, it must have a different name here. I've been also told that Zippo fluids are the same thing with the fluid that watchmakers use to clean and repair watches. I have access to that liquid.. But I thought they were Kerosene, White Gas or Aeroplane fuel. Quote

Just vent the fumes to avoid a fire, wear a respirator to avoid lung and nervous system damage and test on your particular finish to make sure it doesn't cloud or soften it. Quote
skibum5545 Posted December 15, 2004 Report Posted December 15, 2004 Acetone, AFAIK, is not a product name; it is the name of the chemical itself. One common brand of naptha in the US is "Ronsonol", and it comes in big yellow bottles. My local hardware store also carries naptha in containers along with all the other solvents. Quote
