5 way switch question

a guitar i put together a while back decided it wanted to stop working, so i had to get new electronics. . However, its h/s/h formation an i wanted to wire it up like this diagram

but when i got my 5 way the contacts were not like -

1...2...3...4

..1...2...3...4

they were like this -

1...2...3...4...

........1...2...3...4

so do i wire it by counting from one end and going 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 as they come,

or do i count each side seperately, as in the diagram in the link, just offset?

i hope thats clear, and any help would be appreciated
