  1. "Did you do a similar-looking 6-string a while ago?" Yep, made the guitar with what was left over of the spalted maple and some sapelle i had lying around. kept a similar shape too.
  2. One day, when I get rich I wont have to make stuff. Until then......
  3. Cheers, was really making pups because I can't afford to buy what I want. Makings cheaper. I cut the bobbins on the cnc at work, and the the wooden pup covers, so the exposed pole pieces all line up right. Straight off the cnc. (except the black inlay.......)
  4. Fourth project, first bass. Spalted maple front and back. Mahogany core. Maple/mahogany neck through. Massara fretboard. Handwound humbucker and precision pickups. Started this bass 6 months ago, but due to ligament damage in finger I havent worked on it for months. Still needs a bit of shaping and a whole lot of sanding More photos HERE
  5. Finally at a playable stage! Havent done anything for months due to doing ligament damage to my finger, havent played bass in 2 1/2 months. Havent fully finished it. The neck finish needs to be finished. Put it together for a test fit. Plays really well, sounds better than I'd hoped. Kinda between Lp junior and a jazzmaster. once again more pics at photobucket.
  6. I think it would look awesome with a black burst around the edge.
  7. I just put the tuners on and a slotted nut, tested with a straight edge. The string paths (surprisingly) dont interrupt each other, theres just under 1 mm clearance. So it will work (mostly)without a retainer. " so I might try filling those holes, trimming the headstock, and redrilling the top two holes. You might even be able to hide it under the washers and backs of the tuners. " Yeah i thought about that alot when i realised. Only thing that stopped me was tha fact that the headstock have front and back laminates. So that was gonna be a pain. "But I would rather have a guitar with a small visual flaw....." Trust me, it has many of those...........
  8. I'm going to use it how it is. The angle isnt going to be that great, and i can slightly reshape the tree to provide better angles. This guitar is for me to screw round on, Im a bass player and i cant actually play guitar to save myself. I just needed practice on making a neck before i start my bass. If this guitar was for someone else there is no way I'd use this neck. The neck part itself is fine, just made a couple of mistakes on the headstock. But thanks for your input. I just got ahead of myself when it came to the tuners. Maybe in future i will make a new neck. But its all practice really.
  9. Yeah i just did a quick level as I still needed to install the last fret. Seemed pointless dressing them if theres a chance I'd need to do it again. I now have all the frets in and dressed. To get by the string issue I'm just gonna use a string tree Thanks for the comments guys. Leveling the body when it has cracks in the top wood is a pain....
  10. Dude, thanks for the offer. But i have more on the way for my bass anyway. just has to wait a few days
  11. The definition of frustrating..... Having enough fretwire for all but 1/2 a fret. First coats of oil
  12. Finally getting more done on this. Made pickup covers. Routed pickup cavities, drilled jack hole and all wiring holes. Now i just need to finish it. I have however realised a screw up..... When i measured the tuners i didnt double check the string layout.. So i think im gonna have to use a string tree or something.
  13. How about turning it into a 5 string guitar? Do you often use the high E??? You could make/modify a bridge. Use individual string saddles and make a custom bridge plate, custom slot a nut. And you'd have a unique guitar that is usable. Beats scrapping it and quiting. Failing all that, send it to me and ill do the above.
  14. Cheers. Got alot more done today. Neck pocket and control cavity routed, control cavity cover made(mahogany), bridge/stop tail holes drilled, knob holes drilled and started cleaning up the cutaways.
  15. I had enough wood lying around so I decided to make myself a guitar, since I dont have one (I play bass). Body : Spalted maple front and back, Sapelle core with pinstripe. Neck : Sapelle/maple. Spalted headstock, mahogany backstrap. Kwilla fingerboard. Have yet to make the pickup for it. Leaning towards a p-90 type and if that doesnt sound good Ill make a humbucker (if that doesnt sound good, Ill cry...) All black hardware, gotoh tune-o-matic bridge, Gotoh tuners, black knobs. Will have one tone, one volume Basically its identical to the bass im gonna make in appearance body is ready for neck route, then the cutaways can be cleaned up. More pics here
  16. Well, i finally finished it! well..... not quite... But its playable! Now i just need to replace the nut. fix the pickup cover, buy a decent jack, get proper screws for the pickup cover, find my damn strap-locks, make a truss rod cover, fix a gouge in the upper cut-away that become VERY obvious when finished, and work out why my tone knob does nothing and where that damn hum is coming from! (electronics really are my weakness) Oh and i need to get knobs, the ones i had dont fit. More pix here! Almost forgot, pickup is a handwound humbucker wound to 10.2K. Sounds quite bassy at the minute, more than i expected wven with the walnut and chambers, but my tone knob is screwy so that may be part of it. But it does sound lovely.
  17. Dude, Ive had the same problem for the last couple of years with my drummer. He never pays for practice, never has new skins, always says " yeah im getting this bonus soon and then ill re-skin the kit" (but he had money for that computer, xbox360, nintendo wii, smokes and an ounce of weed a month habit.), hasnt been able to play a full set in nearly 2 years (sure the sets fast, but its also only 8-9 songs!). Me and the guitarist have also not been able to play what we want, due to us improving and the drummer not trying to. Me, the guitarist and singer called a band meeting in january, to which he couldnt make it due to "blah". So we talked about replacing him, which was my idea (already had someone offer to drum for us), and we decided to talk to him. So his reply was "yeah im working on my health and fitness, and im getting my finances sorted." So 7 months down the track, we have another band meeting, and now the band doesnt exist. After 6 years it died due to apathy. My advise, tell him your plans for the band and that hes on his last chance or 2. If he steps up, that rules. If he lets you down, kick his ass to the curb. Also, start befriending other drummers.......
  18. Nah, the drill press i was using wouldnt reach into the middle of the body, so they are just the pilot holes. Need to use a friends drill press. I dont play lefty, My girlfriend does. and yeah, lefty does seem really weird. but i am appreciating this shape upside down as well. Its hard to get the feel of the arm contour because its the wrong hand.
  19. Been working on this for a while, just havent taken photos till now. Me and my lady designed it, its for her. Bassically i had an old epiphone les paul that had been beaten to crap but the neck was good, so im using that and the hardware. The body is sapele with a front and back of plain old walnut (but it looks soo good). Accent line is southern oak (white euculyptus???? I think thats what the guy said....) Body has a couple of chambers cut in it cause it was bloody heavy and my lady isnt that big. Still need to rout pickup cavity. But first i need to make the pickup, and the cover. Pickup will be a humbucker, with matching walnut/sapele cover. There is still alot of sanding to be done. These pics were taken after front and sides done to 220, back at 100(and needing lots more...). Just dampened it to raise the grain before i sand more. There is also alot of carpet fluff on it.... oops... More photos here http://s216.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/DKOrrGuitars/KE1/
  20. you dont really have a wood dilema, do you? You just wanted to brag about the awesome wood you have!!
  21. Nah, I stripped the entire pickup. Made the new bobbin top, made a pickup winder, wound the pickup to 9k and a coil tap at 6.5k. It was my first pickup so im not the most informative person on the matter.
  22. Yeah, Ive been in a band with a guy who plays teles for 6 years, never really liked them. Then I made this one, and I think theyre pretty cool now. They just need to be made interesting to look at. When i look at it now i think of old school sports cars, Shelby cobra, austin martin etc.
  23. Finished! Finished the pickup today, assembled this afternoon. pickup is wound to 9k with a coil tap at 6.5. Sounds awesome! Sustains amazingly, has a nice round tone with lots of low mids. more pics - http://s216.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/DKOrrGuitars/
  24. Hey, a friend wants me to make him a jag shape guitar. Would anyone have any plans?
  25. http://s216.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/D...ent=pickup3.jpg replacement pickup bobbin. Original pickup was left in sun, all the wax melted out and the bobbin deformed. Damn that summer.......
