  1. yeah i definitely agree with you, and i considered doing that. i think thats the only way to make it work. i also see your point on it being the wrong neck, however, the combination of the neck and body is exactly what i've always wanted.
  2. I have a guitar i'm rebuilding, an ibanez gax, i know piece of junk! but i love the shape of it! anyway i bought a neck that isn't quite wide enough, by about a 32nd of an inch i've tried shimming it with a piece of cherry, sanded it down, but i can't get the neck to sit straight in the neck pocket. I believe its mostly to do with not being able to create an exactly flat surface on the insides of the shims, but i'm not totally sure if i'm doing something else wrong, or missing a crucial step in the process of having it hold the neck in straight. i'll post pictures of it later, so you can get idea of what i'm dealing with here...but i'm sure you can sort of get an idea with my description. Also, i built a neck extension the correct the scale length difference with existing bridge routes, but i may end up having to fill them, re-drill them anyway...i don't really mind re-drilling holes, i just want to get this neck pocket to hold my neck in straight! any ideas fellas?
  3. Hey Erik! thanks for the reply! i wasn't really trying to find the easy answers, maybe just a push in the right direction. Neck angle is what i meant by the way. i definitely need to invest in that book. thanks for the help!
  4. i'm new at this, and i'm sure you get these questions frequently, so if you know of links to good discussions on the questions i have, i'd greatly appreciate any time spent looking for them and posting them for me! ok so here goes: I own a 5-piece neck from a 60's japanese guitar, and its beautiful!!! (mahogany, maple, mahogany, maple, mahogany) and i'd like to build one nearly exactly like it... so 1. where do you guys usually buy lumber for a project liike this? 2. even though i'd have a template to go by, i'd still like to know the procedure for figuring out the angle on the headstock (is it different for flat mounted bridges and tune-o-matics?) 3. is there a formula to calculate the distance between each fret? 4. how will i know the heighth to build my neck? should it seat at a certain heigth from the body? Also, does anyone know of a website that has free templates for bodies and necks? the guitarbuildingtemplates.com templates seem a little pricy! thanks guys for your help!
