  1. The EMGs have internal shielding and if you wire the system up correctly, it should be free of ground loops and relatively noise-free.
  2. Actually, the main reason for flush mounting a FR is to make it full-floating without having the strings so high off the fretboard. You can also mount it flush and just never pull up on it. You may have to shim the neck a little, but the sustain will be better.
  3. You can purchase either the KFK or ZW sets, or just the pickups individually. Any way you do it the pickups will come with EVERYTHING you need to make it work, including pots, caps, output jack, and wiring diagrams.
  4. It's just the fact that you have a bunch of wankers who buy into all this stuff as if money were no object, trying to "chase" tone, whatever that means. Fact is, most of the so-called bearers of the "Holy Grail" (Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Blackmore, GREEN) never used anything that was cryo-treated or fancy aluminum or titanium bridges and nuts. And most of these people who buy this shill will NEVER do anything memorable with it.
  5. Try Bill Lawrence pickups. They sell several single coil pickups, totally noiseless. They are as quiet as humbuckers. They still sound very single coil. He designed the current SCN pickups for Fender. I have a set in my Strat that I assembled. I am very happy. They run about $40 each. It looks like the site is under construction so here are some links. Also Harmony central has reviews on his pickups and other makers also. http://www.billlawrence.com/ Here is a board devoted to Bill Lawrence products. http://pub123.ezboard.com/fguitarsbyfenderfrm8 SCN's aren't very warm pickups at all, much less the rest of the BL line. Like I said, the EMG-SA pickups would sound good in that application. You might also consider the Duncan Classic Stack or DiMarzio HS-2.
  6. EMG-SA pickups would be good in that application, and an EMG-89 in the bridge would be a good match if it's routed for a humbucker.
  7. Otherwise known as a wood plug, if you go to the supply store looking for them. Regular dowels won't hold for long in that application.
  8. *yawn* I'll keep my DiMarzio's for half the price...
  9. On this forum, wood is seen as a cheap and renewable resource. Most on here have no problem chucking a piece of wood that could be salvaged but in their minds will always be a constant reminder of their hidden mistake and "coverup".
  10. The Fernandez kits will work with the El Diablo...however those kits are a PITA to install in a flat-top guitar, much less a Les Paul. I'd look at the Sustainiac products because you don't have to route up the guitar to install their systems.
  11. Pole staggering matters only on Fender-style single coils with staggered pole pieces. Use flush-mounted pole piece pickups if you're concerned, or just flip the pickup 180 degrees.
  12. Guitar Center exists solely to focus on two major markets: 1. Kids who have no money but want to play a cool looking guitar. 2. Middle aged men who have more money than brains and want an expensive guitar to hang on the wall of their office. They DO have some very high quality merchandise in there, to be sure, but you have to wade through the dimwits and junk just to get at it plus figure out how to use it yourself.
  13. Mmmm...Carvin Smoked Brisket. Goes well with Taylor Pulled Pork. "Use the same wood chips that are favored by Tony McAlpine and Alan Holdsworth for their own backyard smoking activities!"
  14. If you used a credit card, try going through the merchant dispute system. Once the bank takes the money out of their merchant account, that'll get their attention real quick. If they choose NOT to cooperate, you get your money back.
  15. Leave it as a silverburst. That'd look a whole lot cooler than a "dirty" white.
  16. Yeah, it would have been better to do a body-end adjustment for the truss rod, but now you'll just have to remove the locker to adjust the TR. No biggie.
  17. Why was the guitar finished before all of the routs and holes were drilled for the tuners, pickups, and controls?
  18. Dimarzio Evolutions and Breeds are nice high-output pickups, although I'm not sure if you don't like Dimarzio because you've played 'em all or just heard bad things about them on the internet? Duncan JB/59 combo is a classic metal combo, the Dave Mustaine set is the active version of those pickups. The Blackouts just came out and appear to be an updated version of the LiveWire that requires less power and uses an updated preamp to compete with the older EMG designs. Bill Lawrence's pickups are great pickups, but they won't hide your mistakes and can be very transparent and trebly. They are an acquired taste. What it all comes down to is what kind of amp you're going through, what kind of effects you're using, and whether you play rhythm or lead most of the time.
  19. Pretty much. Unless you either drilled holes for new knobs or picked up concentric-ganged pots to put tone and volume controls on the same knob. 500k and 25k versions are readily available for your application.
  20. Malaysia isn't exactly third-world, so finding 25k pots and a stereo jack should be quite simple. You can also find an on-off-on switch to control the pickup selection. The difference in output on the EMG and the stock neck pickup should be negligible to the amp if you have the volumes set properly.
  21. Apparently there's a new version that has "Floyd Rose" stamped on the baseplate and has better inserts on the knife edges. They sound warmer than a genuine Floyd, like the Schaller, but cost less.
  22. Well, looks like it's a long shot too, but I voted for hooglebug's axe. Love me some P-90s and a cherry burst on a flat top!
  23. You might look into the Ping line of FR's too. A lot of people are raving about the quality, sound, and price on 'em.
