  1. well I want Straty sounds still..Single coils will cover a lot of that..Warmer than usual strat sounds would be a plus...Im really asking if thats what you would say walnut offers?
  2. Ok, Ill search here on how to apply the tung oil. But I have a new question.. I have never heard of walnut bodied guitars...From what i can tell from what i have read its heavy and its tonally like alder or ash...And from what i can see and read it looks good with tung oil..What woods really look good with tung oil...I dont really want quilts and stuff...Im actually thinking just like normal alder or walnut or anything like that...
  3. Well..Iv searched google, and got frustrated because i didnt really find anything...So ITs not like Im not looking anywhere before I ask?
  4. Ok what i think I want to do is, Get a alder with birdseye maple top strat body from warmoth. then tung oil it. What kind of tung oil should i get and how much? do i need ot mix it with anything? if its pure oil do you just apply it, let it set fine sand it or steel whool? then apply again? untill you get to what 6 or so coats?
  5. Well..I also want this thing to look nice...The paint is just nasty now. I dont plan to chunk this body if I bought a new one...If I put a new body on and found the sound wasnt good..I could just buy a new neck later and put it on the new body and put the old body back on. And this Is a 1982 Squire MIJ strat. They are famous for the wood they used on them so I HIGHLY doubt that there is just ugly plywood stuff under the paint. This is all just me tryin to find a way to give this guitar more of a kick without spending a fortune..If you guys have any suggestions on what you can easily do to give it a extra kick...Black is just so boring to me..
  6. What kind of tung oil and where can i get it? does it keep it from gettin dirty well? or just block moisture and such? I guess to make things easier ill just throw this in...is there any other really good places to get good finished strat bodies? Maybe a wee bit cheaper than warmoth? Also...Id really like to hear if this spar varnish stuff would be bad or good...I mean We used it to seal and finish quilted birch and it made the wood look amazing and pretty nice looking....one coat sinkin into the finish the next coat gives you a rough coat to sand and then the 3rd is ur smooth gloss coat...and you have a thick water proof coat...So im ont seeing where using it for a natural finish would be bad?
  7. Yeah thats true. Well ok, the stuff i have is spar varnish gloss paint on stuff. IF that helps any...I dont know Im thinkin strip this thing or buy a Warmoth prefinished body. I wouldnd mind being able to have a different trem and the warmoth route would insure good looks and new bridge but cost more than trying to make something of the body i have.
  8. I have a 82 black stratocaster...Its black and I really find black guitars boring..I love the guitars sound and neck to death and I dont wanna chunk it. Right now I have it in pieces trying to do some set up work. And Im in no HUGE hury to put it back together. I want to strip the paint. But after i strip it, what should i coat it in. Tongue oil or whatever maybe? I have like gallons off the brush on stuff you put on wood table tops and bars shlack or something like that i dont know. Its really to seal and protect from water on wood...We coated our Quilted birch Tear Drop trailer interior with it. I basicly want easy and cheap. ID rather have a dull oil type finish than a Glossy finish cheaply done with blimishs all over it!
  9. The most expensive Testors Aztech(azteck?) air brush is nice...I had one for modeling...Its so good at controling paint flow and consistancy.
  10. Yeah but im still in the highschool days heh...I might get a job this summer if I can...That would give me alot of money to put to guitars and I shouldnt have to save long to buy hardwear. Im probobly gonna buy most of it from Brian...He has the best prices on dimarzio pickups i have seen. And he has floresent green knobs! SCORE.
  11. I may do 2 at a time... a PRS custom designed double cut and a JS style thing... I probobly will just buy woods and frets for the guitar, and do what you will be doing and had hardwear as I get money...Im a poor freshman in highschool...I cant afford too much.
  12. Ok...I am going to build a electric guitar...Im lookin at 300 bucks to spend on woods and frets...And I just cant deside on what it is im going to build...A JS style guitar appeals to me, So does a really really nice anderson strat looking thing,Yet so does a laminate top PRS sorda looking thing...I have carved a mandolin top and back so, Carving is down good, So making anything with a carved top is no extrem task. Im just looking for Ideas that any of you might could share that would trip my trigger so much that I deside on that for sure.
  13. I really dont approve of Ed Roman very much...He is a salesman threw and threw and says anything to sell HIS stuff over the real thing. I have hated him since I read a article he wrote saying he no longer will sell G&L strat replacement bodys because they were routed for "pool" routings or, where they route out a big area for whatever pickups you want...And then went on to say that ment the quality was going downhill...Im sure G&L would route a guitar body like that if it wasnt clearly said SSS pickups if they were making bodys...G&L is still the best bang for the buck strat out there I think and without Leo they havnt changed so damnit...Ed can take it up the butt as far as im concerned....
  14. The way we do it on mandolins is you take a pencil and trace around the body the inside line of where the binding is goning to be(or the about very edge of the body body if ur not going to bind it) an the go in 1/2 inch form that line twards the center of the body and trace around the body so you have a channel isolated from the body drawn out 1/2 inch wide. Then we take chisels and plains and use those to make a soft even "recurve" into the body so its a soft U shape in between those two lines with the deepest part being the center. You wanna keep the depht about the same all the way around...Then you take your chisel and just graduate that inside line to around center just enough to get it to where the sander can do its job well and then sand it smooth...It really takes a while but is simple and with a depht guage is really easy if you take your time and dont get too ahead of yourself and check what your are doing frequently.
  15. homo=homosexual DUH What where YOU thinkin god...LoL
  16. Tom Morello from audioslave/the old rage against the machine has a pawn shop jazzmaster loooking thing he baught in canada with that type of blank, odd shaped headstock...
  17. I always thought..you can just wet and heat the top and slowly bend it wita jig of some sort. GnL also uses the vaccume system but it can be a pricey deal...
  18. Where can I get Basswood electric body blanks? I can find them anywhere..
  19. Swwweeeetttt I think i love you...not really but thats cool stuff...I havnt figured out how to use this cad program i have yet so...Im gonna stuck usin other peoples drawings now..
  20. Anyone have a Ibanez Joe Satriani body blueprint? I dont have a JS to trace myself so...Im in need of a wee bit of help..
  21. Would that kit work for guitar? Base coat, and clear coat? or would you do the clear in nitro laquer? I might be able to make my Strat looking MM Petrucci model look alike dream come true..
  22. LMII.com Has 16" radius fretboards...Rather they are slotted or not, I donno... LGM, You think stewmac has compound radius boards with enought for 24 frets?
  23. I really have no plans for the thickness and etc..I have a profile in my head I wanna use, Im gonna shape it after my Japanese Squire 86 Standard Strat neck, and have 24 frets, and have just the fret board and a little bit of maple come behind the neck joint for the last few frets, sorda like the way you do 22 fret necks. It should be a desent thickness, the tipical thickness of a strat neck, but with a domonate V shaping to it in the center, but rounded on the edges like a C shape neck..I have only seen bass graphite rods so, Im assuming that it isnt very common for someone to use them on a guitar, But im sure, no matter what, as long as i have the rod slots cut right, there would be no chance of twisting or warping... I really have just random idea's about the whole project..Thats why I havnt made a HUGE jump in gettin started with it, to many ideas...
  24. I was more like planing on using tung oil on a guitar neck, With truss rod, and 2 graphite reinforcement rods, to keep it from twisting and keep it strait, no matter what...
  25. Well, HAH, Im not to sure if you want to see any closer than that...1 the neck and fretboard just WOULDNT get level so we(My dad and I) had to force the neck and fretboard flush to glue, And we made the fatal mistake of leveling the piece under the fretboard on the body to the neck with a belt sander...and it messed that up so there is a rather large gap between the fretboard and neck on the underside that faces towards teh floor, There are a few gaps between the binding and body, We unexpectedly had to drill larger holes in the headstock for the tuner bushings and chiped out the ebony...We arnt even going to sunburst this one, Just laquer it to protect it and let the flam maple shine out more. We messed up slottin the Nut also, We went too deep so, We have to restart the nut...At this point is playable but the action isnt even, and its too high, the notes go sharp...
