  1. I have to vote "Kill em All" my first Metallica Album (First a Cassette, now a CD) The first four are all great.
  2. Here’s my 2-cents worth, NOTE I have not yet built a guitar (Got wood, Got Hardware, Finalizing my design). The way I see it, there are a lot of variables when it comes to necks and fretboards, a preslotted board if fine as it can still be cut to the required width, with or without binding and or radiused, but as soon as the frets are on you are very limited, I would hate to try cut it. And I can’t see suppliers supplying hundreds of different size fretboards. But I am just a newbie so I might be wrong.
  3. Plan B: (This is what I plan on doing) Buy a preslotted/preradiused fret board and build the rest of the neck yourself. I know you can get them from Lmii and Stewmac.
  4. Thanks for the reply Guitar Ed. I am probably thinking to far ahead, considering I only plan on building the Acoustic in November 2005. My big reason for the kit is that I don’t want to bend the side wood. I guess the Martin sounds like the best idea, since my wood working skills and tools are at the moment very basic.
  5. Thinking of building an Acoustic next year (After I Start/Finish the electric). I know of kits from Lmii, StewMac and Martin. Any sudgestions on which is the best, or are there other good kits out there. Cheers
  6. What about the continent stuck on the bottom of Europe, some of you might of heard of it Africa. Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
  7. Finally took the first step, bought the wood, African Padauk for body and neck (had second thoughts as I carried the 6’x9”X2” piece of timber up three flights of stairs, its heavy). A question of finishing Padauk, I am looking to keep the woods great colour and the natural grain/figuring but with a smooth polished finish. I assume that I will need a lot of grain filler but wont that ruin the natural grain and colour. Any suggestions?
  8. Martin Koch's "Building Electric Guitars" is also a great book goes together well with Melvyn Hiscock's
  9. I have designed my guitar, sort of choosen the wood, the scale, everything but the pickups (Two HB). The guitar is going to be a Les Paul/SG Hybrib, standard Gibson scale, TOM and stop bar. Finger board ebony Top (Maybe carved) Black Chacate (Same family similar properties to Pau Ferro and Wenge) Body and neck either Pink Ivory (Buckthorn family) or African Mahogany. Style of Music: Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Motorhead, early Metallica, Rainbow, Golden Earing, AC/DC, Deep Purple and maybe some Blues and Thrash. I like the sound of the Gibson Tony Iommi's (Friends Epi TI) but finding them at a reasonable price (and willing to ship to South Africa) is almost impossible. So any Suggestion priced around $100.
  10. From Port Elizabeth, thinking of maybe using one of the following as a top on a mahogany body; Chacate - black Pink Ivory Pau Ferro Or Something else that looks interesting. Looking for a reddish wood and a blackish wood. Nice contrast - And I would like to use local timber. Yellowood - Family: Podocapaceae Yellowheart - Euxylophora Keith what woods do you use, have you use RareWoods we have a branch in PE. Ian
  11. Anyone know about the tone qualities Indigenous South African Hard Woods (I Live in SA) (e.g. Yellowwood, stinkwood, assegaai). My Timber Merchants sells all the woods commonly used for guitars (ash, mahogany, maple..) as well as the SA woods just wondering if anybody had tried South African Hard Woods for a guitar.
  12. Thanks for the reply, while I am going to be doing the carving, I have a friend who has been carving (not guitars) for over 20 years who has offered to help, when I get around to starting I will post pics.
  13. I am planning on building a guitar (Planning now for few months) just a one thing I need confirmation on and a question. Is it correct that double action truss rods such as stewmac’s HotRods or Lmi’s TRED can be installed in a flat bottom channel, and both will be suitable for a Gibson style angled headstock (adjustable at the headstock) The guitar I am thinking of making is sort of a Les Paul/SG hybrid (a Genetically modified guitar). I am planning on doing a carved top and had an idea, that I think will look good, but have no idea on the tonal impact of it. I am thinking of laminating (6mm, 2/8in ) alternately dark and light coloured woods together for the top then carving it, I believe that it will look good but what will it sound like (In Martin Kock’s book that he recommended against plywood, would this be similar). Thx
  14. My Metallic Cherry Red 5 String Bass - Fluffy why? why not?
