  1. After some brainstorming and drawing I came up with a router/thicknesser whatchamightcallit, which it basically a H-shaped router cradle. It stands on 2 30mm threaded bars (4 turns=2mm), and the base is a 30mm MDF. It's 1m x 1m, and now I think it could be even less. I hardly ever use my router hand-held anymore, this thing does all my thicknessing, I also used it for truing up the necktrough wings (used with a bearing and a straight guide), planes the angles for carved top instuments in seconds, and with an index pin (not added yet) can be used to cut out bodies using templates etc etc... You can see some more pics of it on my site, under Tele and PT. When not used, I just put away the MDF, and put it up against the wall, right on my worktable. Takes less than a minute to assemble/dissasemble it. Hope that helps!
  2. Excellent work! I noticed the way you did the neck/body connection on the acoustic, could you post a pic or two more of that? Is it a bolt-on? I'm also interested in the tube source! Cheers, Goran
  3. Hi there! I made some plans for a Firebird VII w/ 2 x P90 a while back, and you can download them for free in the mimf Library, under templates I think... I do have a copy somewhere on my HD, but that would take a while to dig out It's drawn for a setneck, not a necktrough, but it has the outline, 24 3/4 scale, all the cavities etc... In the Library you can also find a template for the same Firebird, showing width of the central piece, and the thickness of the wings. That should be enough to easily change my plans to necktrough version in about 5 mins. I'm finishing that guitar right now, actually started it almost 2 yrs ago, but gotten around to finishing it only now - if you have any questions, shoot! BR Goran
  4. Just my .02... I've been thinking of some custom cases for a while now, and found a guy who was making them back in '80s. Since he's not in that line of work anymore, he was kind enough to explain what he did: Make a full size 3D template for the case out of styrofoam (you can cut it with hot wire, like on a bandsaw), just 1cm inside of actual size, to allow for the side thickness, Cut out the top and back out of 3-4mm plywood, Cut the sides out of 10mm plywood, for round portions make a bunch of 10mm x 10mm x case height sticks of same plywood, and stick them to a strip of jeans cloth using PVA glue (they'll look like gun rounds), and stick it to the mold, Fill gaps between sticks with sawdust/PVA mix, let dry, Add top to the mold, let dry, take out styrofoam, Add back, let dry, sand off excess glue etc, Mark opening line of the case, Saw it open, Take another strip of jeans, 10cm wide, long as needed to go around your case, soak with PVA, fold 3 times to get 3cm wide, thick strip, and glue around the inside of the bottom of the case to form a lip while glue is wet, You can dress the whole exterior in jeans, also soaked in PVA (I believe surfboards are finished something like that, ofcourse not with jeans ), even mix it with some powder dye, Fill it with foam from the bottle (for windows and such, don't know proper english word, sorry), Cut out whatever shape you need, Upholster it with whatever, add hinges etc... I would probably add some braces for added strength to both top and back, he didn't do it tho... (I've probably been reading too many books on acoustic guitars...) DISCLAIMER: I haven't gotten around making one of these as yet, so if you do, please let me know if it works For those who need it, 1in = 2.54cm = 25.4mm. BR Goran
