Hey guys, I've got an Ibanez JTK2 with two hums, and each one has a coil tap swich (like those horizontal buttons that has one side up and the other down...so they're not actually built right in to the knobs, and they don't slide like the ones on the fender jag's or jagstangs). I was wondering how easy it is to change pickups in a guitar and keep the coil tap feature? Is this something that can be applied to any set of humbuckers, or is there a chance that my hums were specially made to be able to be tapped?

Well, I had already packed my bags to look for the Holy Grail...I thought it'd make a nice pick holder. But I suppose that the himeleya's would work. Thanks, guys. My girlfriend paid for half the guitar, so for sentimental reasons, I didn't wanna wreck the fretboard any more than I figured I would have to. Another question, though...what does everybody think of string/fretboard lube? Yay? Nay?

Hey all, Well, my cat had a mating call with my gig bag and I had to run it through the wash like, four times. And I forgot that it was still damp when I put my guitar in it one day...four days later I pulled out my guitar and my frets (which were all nice and shiny...probably Nickel made) are now all yellow and my fret board is kinda rough. What is the safest way to bring 'em back to their original color? Do I necessarily have to get 'em redressed or could I use something from home or the local shop? Chris

Hey, guys... I've got an Ibanez JTK 2 with coil taps on my humbuckers...I was wondering if all pickups are "ready" to be coil tapped or if only certain hums are able to do the job. I'm also looking for advice on a set of pickups that would give me a good metal crunch tone, but then if I clean it up, would have some good, but not too powerful lows, and some great, but not too painful highs. What programs do you guys use to design your guitars? I notice that most of them seem to be drawn on the computer...

I thought that the only way a company could nail you for copyright infringement was if you had everything down to spec about a particular part that they patented...like, right down to the inch of body thickness...the angle of a horn...etc, etc. that may have been discussed already, but I likely missed it.

Hey, all. I know this is more of an amp-related question, but here goes. I have a 130 watt mono- Samick bass amp that I play my guitar through 'cause I love the fat sound I get. Anyways, the thing is at least twenty five years old and the knobs crackle, pop, or squeal when I come within three inches of anything on that thing. I'm wondering this: In order to keep it, should I simply get the knobs and stuff cleaned and repaired, or could I replace the preamp for a guitar preamp...I'm just curious if that's possible. And if yes, what info would I need to gather to get the shop-keep to find me one that matches. thanks drchris

I find I don't have a problem with some songs, but then with others it's damn near impossible...I think it has to do with the way I strum or something.

Hey, all: I'm looking for a name to that part on an acoustic bridge...I'll try to explain it. It's like a saddle, but wider, and screws down at each end. I forgot about it when I went to go replace it (it's an old guitar), and the saddle I bought was long, narrow and more or less not big enough for the space that holds it in the bridge. I need the name of this part so I can buy it and finally put this thing back together. Thanks, Chris

Okay, so, here's my plan: After thrashing around town looking to find carpentry skills under a rock in the park, I've decided to just put-together a guitar from parts I can buy. I've got an SG body coming to me...rather, it's SG "styled." It's that darker-red, burgundy color. I've also got black knobs, and a chrome stop tail/bridge set. So, here's my question: I can get a hold of a few cheap strat-styled necks...I like how their not very thick. How crazy would that look, d'you think? And another thing, if I were to find a neck of any type and want to use it for my SG project, how can I figure out if the neck-scale is right? I'm really new to that aspect. Thanks Chris

Hey, I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive wood for my first project guitar. What's good for a solidbody?

Hey, thanks for the advice. For the finish, I'm using a stain/gloss (stain/polyurethane) combo in an antique walnut color made by Polystain...I believe that's the name. I got it at a Canadian Tire store up here in Canada. As for the fretboard...I'm not completely sure, but I wouldn't say it's an expensive or *colored* wood like Ebony, rosewood...hope that clears it up. Unfortunately, I don't know my woods well. I'd be willing to bet it's maple, by comparison with my electric samick's neck... Now, the fretboard was originally painted black...would it be wise to get all of that out and, providing it can clean it up efficiently, stain it the same color? Should I not get the stain on the inlay? I made them myself with solder, from a tutorial I read on the site. Thanks to the Author...that worked out nicely for me I guess what I'm worried about the most is, if I were to put anything on the fretboard, could it chip or rub off onto the hands...I wouldn't like to see a mess on my girlfriend's fingers when she plays it then proceeds to touch my white T-shirt, haha. Oooh, boy, another question: the stain that I'm using is a liquid brush-on and it's giving me troubles in that, when I set the guitar on it's side to allow the stain to dry, when finished, the stain acts like water: Some parts are evenly glossed, where others seemed to pool a space of 'no-gloss'...like how water collects on some surfaces...but that's a bit too extreme of an example. Any ideas on how I can get it to turn out a little more evenly?

A couple quick questions: After the finish is on and all dried...what do you use to polish the body once in a while afterwards? I'm doing an acoustic and I just stained the body two hours ago... Also, as for the fretboard...I was a little rough with the sanding (actually, pretty rough...) and I scuffed the board right up as I was fixing up my frets and inlays...any ideas as to making it look *normal* again? Oh, and out of curiousity...would you ever paint a fretboard, or leave it plain, stained, etc? What's the best option?

Back when I was toying with the idea of designing my first solid-body, I said to a buddy "I want a killer axe." He said, "Why not make an *axe*?" This takes the cake...and the whole friggin' bakery, as well.

Hey, guys... This is my first time doing any work to a guitar, and it happens to be an acoustic at the same time. I'll describe it because I don't have any pictures: It's for my girlfriend, who has small hands...so it's a Junior to begin with. Second hand, and a bit banged up, but mostly scuffs and scratches. Basically, what I've done so far is take all the tuning gear off 'cause it's gone to crap, took off the nut and bridge-nut (I think that's what it's called), and the pickguard. Now, I may have been an idiot for trying it, but I got the crazy idea to steel-wool the neck and headstock...it turned the original reddish finish it had into a tri-colored burnt kind-of look...I hope I can get a pic in the future. It doesn't look too bad. That's what I've done so far. Now here are my questions... It never had much of a glossy finish to begin with...now, I'm new to the world of wood-working, and I'm wondering what would happen if I were to put a glossy finish on it. Would that ruin the sound much? Also, I'm attempting to customize my own logo to put on the headstock. How do you suggest I go about that? I thought I could make my own stencil and spray-paint it...but what'll happen if I do put some kind of varnish/lacquer/finishing material on it? Also, while I was steel-wooling the fretboard (I got the idea online) to get the old dirt and stuff off, I scratched it up quite a bit and I think I discovered that's it's fake ebony wood...'cause it revealed white-ish colors...is there a good stain I can use? Any tips? And finally, I've got bumps on the edges, like where the binding's at and such, and I'm wondering if there's a simple way to cover them up and make it at least *less* noticeable. Being an acoustic junkie...I've not a clue as to how pickups work, which ones are used for what, and what's more suitable for rock/metal...can anybody give me a short run on all that stuff? I've heard the terms single-coil, double, humbuckers...yeesh, it's all over my head, haha. I can't find a whole lot to give me my fix on this stuff... -Chris

I got the CAD drawing here at this site. I'm having trouble trying to print it with my program...it uses upwards of 20 pages with my CAD viewer...if anyone knows an easy way, let me know...like a free viewing/printing program or something along those lines. Maybe I just don't know how to configure my printer, haha. I've never realized how hard it is to find free plans online...Ah, well. -Chris
