  1. the badass bridge has a really large insert with large flutes identical to a schaller tune o matic style.i installed those large inserts on a schecter omen 6 to replace the cheap korean model tun-o matic and what i did was (very carefully)took my dremel with the sanding spindle attachment and slightly enlarged the holes until i could safely hammer in the inserts.the tighter the better though for direct coupling purposes.be careful though as that type of insert has no lip to hide any wrinkles in the finish around your hole.by the way ever hear of erliwine guitars in austin texas?that's where i got my inserts, from mr.erliwine himself.he even looks like a legend.(if you don't know he makes guitars for zz top and dire straits among others)they are really awesome guitars in person and surprisingly his shop is very small.i think he does most or all of the work himself.his shop is about a 45 minute drive from my house.
  2. also 0000 steel wool works better than 320 paper on the cutaways.oh and is this a dunce cap or a party hat.if you put it on this guy it would make a good boneheaded guy
  3. make sure after you sand your first coats you get rid of all the debris in your bridge holes and such.as i already explained elsewhere i made that mistake and paid the price when the spray from the laquer blew it all over my fresh wet clearcoat.
  4. silicoln sealer is a wonderful substance that i use alot around the house.it is very flexible and is used for windows, bathtubs, and any where else you would otherwise use latex caulk.i think that might work for your purpose but it is very thick so you might have to remove the fretboard,i don't think it would squeeze through the tiny hole you are speaking of.one idea though.what about drilling through your inlays(assuming they are dots)and replacing them after you fill.i don't know if that would work as i am more familiar with silicoln than i am with fretboard work.i am sure someone else would know better than i.i will tell you though next time you caulk your bathtub use silicoln instead of latex as it will not mold like latex will.
  5. also kind of looks like a caveman kind of kahler flatmount.same perimeter shape.
  6. no that bridge on the sg is a schaller fine tuning bridge if i am not mistaken but it does have similarities.i think alex's schaller guess is a good one but i am not familiar with it.almost looks like a bigsby.doesn't look like it would stay in tune though.what are you going to put it on?
  7. i just recieved my new veneer from flamingo.(krevazingo)gorgeous by the way.but it needs to be flattened and i could swear i saw a tutorial on that but now all i can find is the one about laminating it.anyone know of this tutorial that could direct me?also how do i cut it without tearout?it is very porous like red oak or mahogany.any help will be greatly appreciated.
  8. great idea i'll get right on that.i think i'll call it"where have all the dumb girls gone?"alternate title"why i not feel smart?"
  9. sanding sealer looks alot like clearcoat except it is thicker.at least mine is.all i have been able to find is brush on but i think it also comes in spray.i got mine at ace.i don't know where you are though, you might not have an ace.
  10. believe me i tried to blame it on her after all how could it be my mistake when it happened just as she walked in the room?i couldn't make it stick though.she's too smart for me.why can't they all just be dumb and let us blame all our mistakes on them?oh well"in a perfect world"
  11. oh wait til you hear this one.yesterday when i did my first clearcoat i forgot to remove the steel wool residue from the bridge mounting holes and on my first spray it blew little pieces of steel wool all over my fresh coat just as my wife walked in to see how it was going.needless to say that is one mistake i will not be repeating.finishing is probably the hardest thing for me but i will get it right as i am very stubborn.(too stubborn maybe?)
  12. i think he means to turn the body over.or are you making a joke?hard to tell on written text.
  13. don't feel bad i just came home from work after clearcoating my guitar yesterday and thought i would do the back.i put a pint sized can of paint down, covered it with a small piece of posterboard, and set my guitar on it thinking"how could it leave a mark as smooth as posterboard is?"it did.i am going to have to use the fake neck idea in the future.my theory is i do one side at a time while the body is flat to build up thickness, then i will sand it flat and put one thin final coat on.if it doesn't work then i will know better next time but it worked real well with the colored laquer.i will probably do it differently once i have a warm paint shed set up but right now i have a case of the runs.(on my guitar that is)
  14. fyi carvin uses two graphite reinforcement rods plus truss rod on all their necks.i have two.very stiff.i was pondering the same thing on my first try in neck building.also wanted to make it a 5 piece laminate(korina with thin strips of bocote, ebony,or bubinga.)i know it's a tall order for my first neck but no guts no glory right.)besides i don't want any guitars hanging around that i'm not proud of.
  15. they are probably looking at how many les paul look a likes esp is selling and want part of that market.one thing though, doesn't the sustain come from the set neck and thick mahogany body?also the necks are generally mahogany too which contributes to that les paul sound.(along with the pickups and pickup placement).
  16. agreed.personally though i see tremendous beauty in the complexities of the floyd.and have you seen the kahler flatmount?a work of art in my opinion.i am going to try one out on my next project(a neck thru v )and i may have to change my preference.it seems like a more ingenious design.i guess i will see.
  17. good news!kahlerinternational is up and running again.the flatmount looks sweet as hell.
  18. by the way and on another subject i think the gm v8 is the only way to go for high performance.long live the king.
  19. i have to agree with alex in that the(double locking) floyds stay in tune very well and i don't think you can use a tremelo too much.i can dive bomb my lo pro on my sabre until the strings are completely slack, hit the 5th harmonic on the bottom 3 strings and pull the tremelo back all the way to the body and vibrato back to standard bridge position and still be completely in tune as long as my strings are properly stretched and not too old.they do break sometimes though.i think rollers on the saddles would help that.i have no opinion on the fender though as i am not a fan.the reason being i feel the need to pull those slayer style hell-bombs.i have been to alex's website though and i must say he uses his tremelo very well.i was extremely impressed with his satriani covers.that is really you playing on those is it not alex?but i am 99%sure that for that style of playing the floyd is superior(my opinion)i do enjoy the way stevie ray used his fender though, but he was one in a million.i guess it all goes back to personal preference.some people believe 24 frets are too many.some ignore the extra musical expression a tremelo brings all together.when i first started playing i was convinced a tremelo was a waste of time but the better i got with one the more i came to love and respect it.just my 2 cents.i hope i don't offend.
  20. the wizard 2 neck has a 400mm radius(which comes out to almost 16")i don't know where you might find that.
  21. i love the cedar it would definately be a shame to hide it.my question is,how does cedar sound as a tonewood?or is the mahogany the majority of the body?
  22. warmoth.go to supplies,then fingerboards.they have many choices.(warmoth.com)only available in 10" radius.(25 1/2 scale in ebony $22.50)
  23. i agree about the junk on the walls of a lot of stores.luckily in austin we have a quality music store which only has medium to high end guitars.a lot of u.s.a. made b.c.rich and tom anderson and so on.
  24. i have been working on my guitars for years but building them is new.i am almost finished with my first guitar(fixed bridge, carvin neck)but painting the body has been very tedious.
  25. 93 ibanez sabre custom h-s-s all emg blue burst flame maple top with wizard neck and all choclate brown hardware. schecter omen 6 h-h emg's and a new stain and finish job(i also enlarged the cutaway. fernandez revolver pro h-h with a duncan invader at bridge and sustainer at neck. jackson pro series super telly.(just bought it going to replace plastic pickguard with flush mounted maple. marshall g100rcd head crate 4x12 cab zoom driver pedal 12 band eq
