  1. Ok so my next question is... where can i buy just the clip to install on my basses!?
  2. Ok so Ive made plenty of flat headstock necks (fender style) now I want to go onto angled headstocks (Gibson style) The problem I have is that my bandsaw and my mitre box does allow for that extreme (15 degrees or so) of an angle without modifying. My precision mitre box goes to 45 degrees and my bandsaw goe to only 60 degrees. Any tips tricks or plans to set something up on them would be great! How are others cutting this angle? Thanks, Joe
  3. All my knowledge and research in woodworking lends me to believe that a single piece of wood used for the neck and angled headstock would be stronger than a scarf jointed neck and angled headstock. Yet most all guitar workings I read says the scarf joint is stronger. Im not disputing either but just having a hard time understanding why a scarf joint would be stronger and more desirable in making angled headstocks than cutting the angle and neck from one solid piece of wood. Any help or directions to articles and such to help me understand is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all. Joe
  4. Ok so i have made many fender style straight headstock necks successfully, but now want to get into angled headstocks like gibson and acoustoc styles. I have read much about scarf joints and it seems all are being mitered to about 15 degrees. Is this the definitive angle is there a reason other angles arent used? Can I use say a 40 degree angle? What about a one piece neck angled the way i want? I've heard one piece angled necks arent as strong as scarf joint necks but it would seem to me that they would be stronger than a jointed neck. It seems to go against most normal woodworking suggestions that one piece is stronger than two joined pieces especially on an angle. Just a bit confused. Any insight and help and opinions are greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!
  5. I have been testing my finishing techniques (before actually wasting good wood and an instrument) and have moved to the necks. I have 2 questions. The seemingly natural looking necks like fender and the like seem to have a finish/clear coat on them... is this correct or is it just bare sealed wood or what? Is the side of the fretboard also clear coated? Also if I am to paint a neck how do I avoid the paint ridge to the fretboard? If it should be finished before the fretboard goes on how to I protect the finish when sanding the fretboard smooth to the paint level. Or how can it be done with an existing neck without removing the fretboard. If i already experimented on a junk neck and now have a paint ridge higher than the sides of the fretboard how would I get rid of it? I masked the fretboard from the paint and clear coats. Ok more than 2 questions really but help, insight and pointing in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. TIA, joe
  6. Just wired up a new kit bashed guitar and the all the wiring seems correct, no hum from bad ground, all 3 pickups play, tone and volume controls work yet the volume is only half of what my 2 other guitars output. It seems the pick ups have the same impedance. The only difference is this guitar has only one vol and one tone for all three pickups HSH. My other is a dual HB gibson style 2V 2T and a strat with HSS 1V 2T. Any ideas or suggestions where to start? Thanks in advance, joe
  7. So more of an opinion question now... you think the sound difference would be enough if both value caps were used and a switch to choose one or the other used? Kinda like splitting coils on Humbucker. You know Im going to try it to see... In my own style of playing i hardly ever, if ever turn the tone controls off 10. Maybe its the caps that are installed that makes me feel the sound just gets way way too muddy on almost every guitar I have ever played. I do have plenty guitars to play with so I'll be heating up that soldering iron. Thanks for all the info, it has explained alot to me and exaclty what I was wanting to know
  8. I have seen these two values very often on guitars .022uF or .047uF Which should be used for what application? Sound difference? for different value pots? different value pickups? Also what would the difference be between the disc shaped capacitor or the can shaped ones if any. Any enlightening would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance joe
  9. Dont know if its right but sounds logical to me! Thanks for the post in any case because I have been looking for help with the exact same thing!!!! Gonna try it as soon as i can! Thanks again!!! Now should it be actual stains (only found in browns by me so far) or colored dye or is the dye in liquid form considered the stain as referred to here?
  10. I have some quilted maple bookmatched pieces. Ive done many solid color guitars from scratchup to this point. I now want to use the quilted maple as the face of the guitar and want to now how to add different colors and still let the quilting show. I've seen many guitars in blue, green and red and the like (EG: Raven West and such) Any help or links to sites would be greatly appreciated. And after adding color do i just go ahead and clear coat it along with the rest of the guitar. Thanks!
  11. Luckily for me there are many Michaels stores around here on Long Island! Thanks! Can you tell me the brand name? If you recall? Thanks again, Joe PS yep many many top coats but thats fine with me to get the look! I'm guessing I'm looking at probab;y 25+ coats ( aerosol ) of clear to sand a smooth finish. I was not too happy that the older Kramer guitars you could feel the crackle under the top coats... even though most were not expensive guitars anyway they sure looked cool!
  12. Ok i have looked and looked and was hoping someone can tell me where I can purchase Vreeble Crackle paint (laquer) to create a crackle finish on my guitar. Or any other viable ideas on how to. Not an aged crazing look but those wide crackle spaces like on the old Kramer guitars. Thanks, joe
  13. Here you will find almost any wiring scheme imaginable and even if you dont there's enough info here to mix and match and get what you need. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/
  14. ok so a basic question (I think) is it so that a higher impedence is a hotter/louder pickup? Like 11k is louder than a 6k pickup?
