  1. Ok so my next question is... where can i buy just the clip to install on my basses!?
  2. Ok so Ive made plenty of flat headstock necks (fender style) now I want to go onto angled headstocks (Gibson style) The problem I have is that my bandsaw and my mitre box does allow for that extreme (15 degrees or so) of an angle without modifying. My precision mitre box goes to 45 degrees and my bandsaw goe to only 60 degrees. Any tips tricks or plans to set something up on them would be great! How are others cutting this angle? Thanks, Joe
  3. All my knowledge and research in woodworking lends me to believe that a single piece of wood used for the neck and angled headstock would be stronger than a scarf jointed neck and angled headstock. Yet most all guitar workings I read says the scarf joint is stronger. Im not disputing either but just having a hard time understanding why a scarf joint would be stronger and more desirable in making angled headstocks than cutting the angle and neck from one solid piece of wood. Any help or directions to articles and such to help me understand is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all. Joe
  4. Ok so i have made many fender style straight headstock necks successfully, but now want to get into angled headstocks like gibson and acoustoc styles. I have read much about scarf joints and it seems all are being mitered to about 15 degrees. Is this the definitive angle is there a reason other angles arent used? Can I use say a 40 degree angle? What about a one piece neck angled the way i want? I've heard one piece angled necks arent as strong as scarf joint necks but it would seem to me that they would be stronger than a jointed neck. It seems to go against most normal woodworking suggestions that one piece is stronger than two joined pieces especially on an angle. Just a bit confused. Any insight and help and opinions are greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!
  5. I have been testing my finishing techniques (before actually wasting good wood and an instrument) and have moved to the necks. I have 2 questions. The seemingly natural looking necks like fender and the like seem to have a finish/clear coat on them... is this correct or is it just bare sealed wood or what? Is the side of the fretboard also clear coated? Also if I am to paint a neck how do I avoid the paint ridge to the fretboard? If it should be finished before the fretboard goes on how to I protect the finish when sanding the fretboard smooth to the paint level. Or how can it be done with an existing neck without removing the fretboard. If i already experimented on a junk neck and now have a paint ridge higher than the sides of the fretboard how would I get rid of it? I masked the fretboard from the paint and clear coats. Ok more than 2 questions really but help, insight and pointing in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. TIA, joe
  6. Just wired up a new kit bashed guitar and the all the wiring seems correct, no hum from bad ground, all 3 pickups play, tone and volume controls work yet the volume is only half of what my 2 other guitars output. It seems the pick ups have the same impedance. The only difference is this guitar has only one vol and one tone for all three pickups HSH. My other is a dual HB gibson style 2V 2T and a strat with HSS 1V 2T. Any ideas or suggestions where to start? Thanks in advance, joe
  7. So more of an opinion question now... you think the sound difference would be enough if both value caps were used and a switch to choose one or the other used? Kinda like splitting coils on Humbucker. You know Im going to try it to see... In my own style of playing i hardly ever, if ever turn the tone controls off 10. Maybe its the caps that are installed that makes me feel the sound just gets way way too muddy on almost every guitar I have ever played. I do have plenty guitars to play with so I'll be heating up that soldering iron. Thanks for all the info, it has explained alot to me and exaclty what I was wanting to know
  8. I have seen these two values very often on guitars .022uF or .047uF Which should be used for what application? Sound difference? for different value pots? different value pickups? Also what would the difference be between the disc shaped capacitor or the can shaped ones if any. Any enlightening would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance joe
  9. Dont know if its right but sounds logical to me! Thanks for the post in any case because I have been looking for help with the exact same thing!!!! Gonna try it as soon as i can! Thanks again!!! Now should it be actual stains (only found in browns by me so far) or colored dye or is the dye in liquid form considered the stain as referred to here?
  10. I have some quilted maple bookmatched pieces. Ive done many solid color guitars from scratchup to this point. I now want to use the quilted maple as the face of the guitar and want to now how to add different colors and still let the quilting show. I've seen many guitars in blue, green and red and the like (EG: Raven West and such) Any help or links to sites would be greatly appreciated. And after adding color do i just go ahead and clear coat it along with the rest of the guitar. Thanks!
  11. Luckily for me there are many Michaels stores around here on Long Island! Thanks! Can you tell me the brand name? If you recall? Thanks again, Joe PS yep many many top coats but thats fine with me to get the look! I'm guessing I'm looking at probab;y 25+ coats ( aerosol ) of clear to sand a smooth finish. I was not too happy that the older Kramer guitars you could feel the crackle under the top coats... even though most were not expensive guitars anyway they sure looked cool!
  12. Ok i have looked and looked and was hoping someone can tell me where I can purchase Vreeble Crackle paint (laquer) to create a crackle finish on my guitar. Or any other viable ideas on how to. Not an aged crazing look but those wide crackle spaces like on the old Kramer guitars. Thanks, joe
  13. Here you will find almost any wiring scheme imaginable and even if you dont there's enough info here to mix and match and get what you need. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/
  14. ok so a basic question (I think) is it so that a higher impedence is a hotter/louder pickup? Like 11k is louder than a 6k pickup?
  15. Ok Basic 101 question here. What would be the difference in using 250K pots and 500k pots for volume and or tone controls? Thanks
  16. Ok so here's another novice question... It seems to me that the tone on the 59 when split is different even though it is louder when in humbucker mode as opposed to single coil mode... is that my imagination because the volume does drop? And is there a way to add a resistor or something in line or somewhere to make the volumes equal in both modes other than adding something that requires a battery or a boost but rather cut or lower the volume on the Humbucker mode to match the single coil mode... Hope that made sense and wasn't to 'Pickup 101' for this forum
  17. I installed a pearly gates humber in my strat in the bridge position. I also installed an SL59 in the neck position, both with a switch to split the coils. I here a difference on the 59 when i throw the switch but not a noticeable difference with the pearly gates when i throw the switch. Is there enough of a sound difference in the PG to hear a difference when splitting the coils? ( I assume there should be) Also is there a noticeable difference in sound from the the slug side of the PG and the adjustable side? Thanks in advance for any info and input. joe
  18. I recently picked up a setmour duncan ssl-5L for a great price. I would like to maount it to a right handed guitar. The poles are not unifoorm and cut at different heights. The white wire comes off one end and the black off the other not out of the center as most. For a right handed guitar which position is best? cut poles (shorter poles) to high e string or low e string? Really just opinions for tones for the orientation. Thanks
  19. Ok i see these on eBay all the time and am curious as to why a wired set of 3 pots and 5 way switch for fender vintage guitars are always listed for anywhere from $300 to a whopping $1295.00? Is it only the collectability of the items? I mean I would think that electronic components would be better , quieter, less distortion and such these days than way back then. We're npot talking the difference betwween tubes and transistors. Heres one going for $1295.00 starting bid as an example - ---- 1963 FENDER STRATOCASTER SET OF POTS & 3 WAY SWITCH . POTS DATE 304 6324 AND ARE STAMPED 250k, NO CAP, THREE WIRES ARE ORIGINAL. pots are clean but still may need the insides spray cleaned. ---- This one even says they may be dirty inside! While $1295 mat be a bit extreme I see them regularly listed for $300 - $600 So whats the deal with this... anyone?
  20. Oh now, it's not that big of a deal. And I'm sure you meant well (maybe not against protex, but in general). We all get grumpy sometimes. And besides, this is the internet, it's not a luncheon with the ladies. Like i said i rechecked everything. i reset the neck angle by half of what i had added just a smidge of tension did the saddle height thingy and i now have a sweet sounding (without an amp of course) MIM body and MIA Neck combo. Im even a hair lower than fender specs. Maybe i was also just expecting the action to be impossible low (like not even having to press a string down hehehe) Once again thanks to EVERYONE for the advice and discussion!!! Joe
  21. ok but if you're not an engineer or math wiz are those formulas able to be but in simple terms? Or can someone come out with for such and such radius the wood needs to be this width and height... Sorry never was great at math :-(
  22. Thanks everyone for all your input. I went through everything again step by step. I did get rid of the buzz and the action is a bit better? but still not where i would want it. Maybe i am asking for lower than is possible. fender specs actually seem high to me. I will be looking for a good pro do give it the once over as well and maybe watch him go through the motions. The problem is how do i find a good tech / luthier... i was told to stay away from Sam Ash and that the only major one here. Im on Long Island so if anyones in the area and recommend someone. Thanks again for everyones input. joe
  23. I have a strat and love the SEYMOUR DUNCAN SL59-1 in my freinds strat. However i would also like to have the sound of the classic strat single coil. This pickup would be in the bridge position. How would I add a switch (wiring wise) to split the coils so i could use single coil mode or humbucker mode like the old Dimarzio dual sound humbuckers. The SEYMOUR DUNCAN SL59-1 does come with 4 wires. Can this even be done with this pickup? thanks!
