there is supossedly a 90% rule, another words, it has to be less than 90% similar, but then on the other hand, companies like Vester were sued over similarity, and closed out of business in the USA yet they look more like Ibanez and jackson than they do a fender. there are alot of guitars that resemble other guitars, well within that illegal margin, but what it really comes down to is the money behind it, like anything else here in the states. MCS guitars just won over HHI (BC rich) for the rights that Neal should have had in the beginning. Fender owns Jackson, who once was Jim Charvel, people in the USA have always been lawsuit happy. I own some Vesters, they are pretty hard to come by, someday I may be sued for ownership of such things, in the meantime, ill just keep trying to build original designs, and having fun with my gifts.

PRS won, which means two things, they had a great lawyer, or they were right, it is VERY hard to be original these days as it is, Neal Moser, MCS guitars, has a similar battle with bc rich going on as we speak, and he will probably win it, but it goes to show, anyone can sue anyone in these wonderful United States, and as far as the percentage of interest for a spin off, you have to be 90% original to get away with it, all of the major names try to keep us smaller names from getting even close to their designs, as wrong as it may be, this is how the industry is, cut-throat, and posessive.

despite all my attempts to become a great luthier in the industry, I have failed, sort of, hehehe, I was talking with Neal Moser the other day and he needed a luthier/helper so I am dropping my company, submitting all my stuff to him for his use, and joining his workforce. so IF you were considering a purchase, (doubtful) then you will have to ask him. I dont think I will be here much anymore, this last attack has left me a little numb for the crowd here, those who I respect, you know who you are, and I hope to meet you one day while handing you a Moser Custom, those I dont, there is no point in being a part of your rhetoric, go ahead and lock this so as to avoid seeing any further banter from anyone else.... peace out.

wow like i need to explain to anyone, lets see, divorce, money, issues, its all personal, and while we are at it, none of anyones business, my question was to find a company oer two that deals in mass production on a smaller scale so I could sell a little cheaper than what I do now, as far as websites, I just need to pay the guy for my own domain, its in the works, I came here, for advice, about my question, if none of you have it then so be it, ill go elsewhere, and if you insist on being rude, and questionative of my morals, or business, then you will have to do that to someone else I guess, I dont ned it, I have had enough reality checks in life thank you. to be a business in an industry where you are going to be cutting throats, isnt healthy, take it from me, I know, and it would have cost any of you the same to do what I did and have to pay for now, I am a good person, with good intent trying to find information. thanks

I know already that Import, is out of USA, lol but I am in search of a company or three that take an american gutiar, usually wexpensive, and make slightly cheaper models of it or them, I am noticing MCS has his lined up and I have requested the information, yet to see if he even responds with a usable reference for such things as he may feel it as a competition style move on my part, but in reality, I am no threat to him. I thought I would ask here as well. . . any ideas?

It isnt an easy thing being the new guy and gettin your stuff out there, I use the most unconventional means to do so, and now have about 8 artists and 5 bands looking to be owners of Phoenix Guitars, keep your chin up, dont ever give up, the rewards are amazing !

the guy at fender is full of it, it wasnt still in your hands due to the name "fender " not being on it, lol fender was, and will be a household name for years to come, but it isnt that, people are often afraid to try something new. Me for instance, I am currently developing 5 different pickups for electric guitars that are going to blow peoples minds, as well as a few other guitar gadgets, and my guitar designs are aggressive and extreme, so i feel your pain, that guitar pic you posted, I immediately thought of a surfboard, (sticker, general feeling of the look) so it seems to me you are getting the look you wanted, and it appears to be a finely crafted instrument. By the end of your thread here, it seems as though you are headed the right direction, and of course, if you could nail down an endorsement deal, that would naturally give you a big shove in the right direction.

Westheman, . . . first off, as far as being "famous" I probly have more customers lined up than most in here, irregardless harsh tone isnt needed, as for you matt, here are your answers, few of which are probably good enough at this moment, but things change Well I would have some qustions for you like what design of mine do you like?, the design you have in this thread, as it is the only one i have seen. how many guitars do you sell in a year?, I sold two in the last two months of last year and I am currently re-organizing things to accomidate more. how would i submit desigs to your company?, email me the designs, if you had noticed on my site, which is currently down buit one page as I am rebuilding it, I do have several different designers from around the world, and I deal specifically in exotic shapes. would I still have the rights to what ever design I submited to your company?, Yes you would, you would have all rights associated with ownership of the design, if i sell one you get ten percent and your name gets "out there". how long has your company been around for?, coming up on two years. would the guitars be built by hand by you?, Yes I do not believe in mass producing guitars. sorry about all the qustions and I still have more I need to know these things so thanks for you time !!METAL MATT!! ←

hmmm, aside from it looking somewhat similar to my design lol, id say you do have some talents there, feel free to submit desigs to my company, you get ten percent of each sale and your name gets out there....as far as the tuners...i would go with a similarity to that hetfield looking thing, but then I would run a 4 x 2 set up just for kicks....as far as Ed Roman goes...and my various quotes of him (being I AM one of those noobs around here) I must say...he does have some accurate information...it is unfortunate that alot of guitarists just dont give a rats a$$TALKER about that information, because, I do find what most of the industry does, is cut corners and lie alot about what they are.

hmm as far as pickups.... i was hugely into gain...thinking it helped tone, when actually, it takes away, doesnt let it resonate properly....burstbuckers sound really good to me...with an all tube set up...outstanding...korina...there are many body woods available, basswood, mahogany, and alder seem to be the favorites..i personally go for more exotic stuff, such as black walnut and purpleheart, part of your tone is how you "feel" when you play, Andre Segovia r.i.p. was a tonal master, and explains in great detail in a book, that alot of your tone comes from your fingers...point being, there are many MANY contributions to tone, and to simply talk of wood or pickups alone....well, its pointless.

while it is true....nearly ALL companies cut corners....they do everything they can to save a buck, truthfully there are only a select few that do not. over the years Gibson, (not epiphone of course) has done pretty well for themselves, after all the things I have learned about the companies on the market, they are one of the two or three companies I would still buy from IF I wanted another company's guitar, but....I dont. When it all comes down to it, up until some point....Samick made 68% percent of the world guitars....Epiphone is made Entirely by them, Ibanez was mode by four or five different companies....this is all information ANYONE can find out if they dig enough in the right directions....alot of people have been misled over the years, this includes subjects of tonewoods, pickups, quality....the companies would have us believe strongly in one thing but whne you dig deeper you find its another case, I find this very troubling and its one of the reasons I do things the way that I do them. Other custom makers told me..."you cant run a business that way, it costs too much, they also said I cant sell guitars the way I build them for 1000.00, but I am, for christmas even, most companies tell you a 6 month mandatory waiting period for your custom....c'mon lets get real here. A big part of the industry is depressing to me, and there are few companies I am not dissapointed with as a guitarist.

heh ....ok, where should i start hahahahaha, oh I know lets look at the facts... 68% og the WORLDS guitars were made by Samick, that percentage includes ALL epiphones, can ya guess what i think of that and what I would say next? fact is most people (usually kids) that dont know the information avaiable, could go out and by a bronze BCR or an old ibanez rg120 off of ebay, I myself, (partially due to building my own custom design and wanting to sell them and partially because I had a good experince with my first guitar being expensive) totally recommend that if you want to "try" a guitar even, that you shouldnt get something you could wind up being dissapointed with, and not to mention the fact that if one isnt the axe slinger they thought they wanted to be, an expensive guitar has much more resale value than an old beater or $4!+box as I call them.my guitars personally will hold value, as they will only be made 50 times each. this makes them fairly original considering there are billions of people worldwide, and it makes them collectable as well. These were the thoughts I had when starting up this company, as well as the need to beat prices for equalt products. So instead of having such a general topic, maybe we should choose to voice our opinions on what is going to get them the best bang for the buck, the first thing they need to kn0ow is this! DO NOT BUY A SIGNATURE SERIES GUITAR JUST CUZ YOUR HERO HAS ONE....simply go to a shop, and play em all till you fond the one you KNOW is it! everything here, at least for the most part, someone on here could argue just as convincingly as I have... so the best of luck to whomever jumps into the chasm of knowledge of what to and not to do!

well, first of all, i would be happy to cam the guitar to you, i have msn, yahoo and aim, caliber_guitars@msn.com fret_bored_72 for yahoo and fretbored72 for aim, secondly, I personally found the neck through to be much easier, you dont have to worry about the neck pocket, lastly... " You care more about the shape and looks than the sound? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? " check it out, ill put any of my guitars up against any other guitars for tone and sustain, and they will at least be equal, and as far as strength, these babies are 1 3/4 inches thick of the densest woods available, i highly doubt you could just break it with your bare hands. i went for quality here, not quantity like most of the industry.

here is the question at hand...neck thru or bolt? before you answer....you should be made aware, that neck thrus, no matter what anyone thinks....in the areas of tonal signature and sustain are far superior in my opinion, as well as having done tests myself between two identical models, with the different neck options. another thing you need to be aware of, is that you probably shouldnt make a guitar even remotely close to anything neal has, he is overly protective of his work, but he has just cause. he was one of the originators of BC rich, made them who they are, and they robbed him blind, even after he left the company. now if you are considering neck thru, you may want to go through carvin and buy thiers, there is nothing wrong with the necks, they are 174.00 for 6 strings and 199.00 for 7, this is how i started my company, was by using thier necks, I am currently working on our second prototype as well as some great new ideas for the near future. I would be happy to build you a body, (ill make ya a great deal) which I have designed, that would probably be just what you are seeking.

i didnt post the designs there, they found them , or a friend showed them, and they went nutz, lol but things are good there now, and look to be good in the future as well, I too believe that building a guitar shouldnt be defined by shapes, or concepts, I just been playing them so long, i decided to become a luthier lol, I always worked on my own...so it was the next logical step, and I have found the info that this website provides to be invaluable...thx for the warm welcome, from now on I will think about what i say before I say it lol

look, ive been torn from one side to the other over other designs i had the closely resembled Moser's work, fortunately for my family jewels, I didnt create them, but I spent ALL day yesterday defending my "company" to Neal and his friends, now if you are suggesting that I take after Alembic i must first take it as compliment because he has beautiful work....I can only see one mine is similar to, but I have never seen it before today , so I KNOW that this guitar is an original thought, and thats all that matters. I just got done re-arranging things over similarity, fact is we wanted a DOUBLE bladed axe, because to our (apparently limited) knowledge there had not been one made yet.do I have to defend myself here too? I was told by a reg here that you guys were mellow..... i was attacked elsewhere and this is like a subtle underlying accusation in itself, I grow weary of defending my own honor when I dont think I should have to. I just want to build exotic guitars I apologize for my attitude, next time i will check it at the door, Im not sure what you meant, so I guess I shouldnt be so hasty to be in defense, Moser's crew was VERY hard on me yesterday, and I think it affected me profoundly.

wow ok so I am new here, this place has been recommended by a couple of guys that are members, so far I am in love with the site, ive been wandering it for about 6 hours now, I am Dave, here to be known as my soloist name Anekretia Anek for short...I have been slingin axes and burnin fret boards for twenty some-odd years now. I only recently decided to build one, and even did some digital mock ups of future possibilities you can find those here : My Baby we used only the highest quality parts, the body wood is honduras mahogany, and the neck is (carvin) eastern hard rock maple. with a carvin m22sd pickup grover tuners, and a beautiful black paint job with metallic siler axe edges..simply called the "Caliber Axe" My partner and friend designed the body and we cut it up and put it all togetheri did a nice bit of set up on it. the original concept was to build our own guitars, but we have decided to be "overnight" luthiers and start our own company with a few select designs....let me know what you think, I am a father of three sons and a husband to a beautiful wife. I look to be in this industry for life and make a decent living at it.
