Thats great help thanks! Im doing the first one but cut its like the second one, if the angles are about the same then ill just add some spare neck wood onto the face to make it level. Thanks again!

As the face of the headstock is raised level with the nut with bound headstocks does that mean more headstock angle is required. I currently have 13 degrees which is what gibson has on unbound headstocks that are level with the bottom of the nut. I keep thinking that the same angle but higher face will mean the strings might pop out the nut!

I dont have a band saw, i tried heating it but the glue wont budge. I really dont want to scrap it so do you think its a pretty good join? Ill post some pics to show you to see if you think it will hold Actually i got a better idea..........a hairdryer! Does anyone have any experience with this method?

Malmsteen, he isnt all about shred just because he plays fast, he can do some rock and roll type stuff too. Listen to teaser, that solo will blow your mind! Theres loads more aswell but too many to name

Hey everyone is the headstock binding meant to be on the same level as the fretboard binding or lower than it? As in do they meet at the nut? Or can someone post a picture of a bound headstock side view please?

Hey ive just done a scarf joint with some titebond wood glue but im not 100% happy with it as it has some unglued areas as the two surfaces are not absolutely square. I figured i need to redo it so is there any way i can unglue the join without damaging the wood too much? Cheers everyone

Hey for the neck peckup i recommend the seymour duncan 59, i put the humbucker version in my strat and i can get that sweet eric clapton "woman tone". If your not going for humbuckers theres also a single coil version even though ive never heard it but should sound the same.

Thanks everyone, no it hasnt been profiled just the initial cuts for neck and headstock angle and the drop for the figured top. The marks are like the on lex luthiers picture but very bumpy, i think that if i sand it down completely flat, i will remove the cutting lines i drew. (The woodworker cut it VERY close to the line, sorry no pictures yet) I tried to plane it down level with a handheld electric planer but it cand get those hard to reach places such as the dropout, and it isnt wide enough to be used effectively. Ill need to rent out a power tool or something but would a belt sander be able to get in those tricky areas?

Hey i just got my neck blank bandsawed and there are these ripples on the surface. Im just wondering what the best type of sander or plane etc is for levelling these out. (One that can reach right to the edges of a dropout aswell)

Ive decided not to make a guitar with no neck angle now, im going to glue on the wings at an angle to get the neck angled back. It seems more sensible like that now that i think about it.

ok cool, thanks for the tips southpa. I worked out the angle and it seems to be exactly 4 degrees and the fretboard is raised approximately 1.5mm above the body. I think that seems about right, had a check on an SG and i think the extra 1 degree in the angle is because im using 25.5" scale length rather than the Gibson one. As for the headstock, i have to admit i havent designed what it looks like yet but i figured i could leave it "paddle" shaped and shape it when i think of something really nice. Sorry for sounding dumb but whats a scarf joint?

Ok, i agree the large drop will look a bit strange, so ive decided to make a neck angle. I did a search on this forum and it seems the best way to do it is to glue the wings on at an angle and then shave the surface flat. Does anyone know how to work out the neck angle and the height the fretboard needs to be raise. (Im pretty sure there is a raise in the fretboard as my brothers sg has a neck angle and raise) Cheers everyone

According to Make Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvyn Hiscock it mentions that some early 1970s SGs and reissue flying Vs were made with no neck angle and the fretboard was just raised flush above the body. It has a picture of the SG but it doesnt actually say how much it is raised by. Does anybody have one of these guitars or know where i can get information on them?

Lucky1, i meant no neck angle. By the way, ive just had a brainwave. Im not sure if this will work but in theory it should, well anyway: As a stratocaster has no neck angle, what if i take the amount the fretboard is raised above the body on that and then add on the difference between the height of a strat trem and a tune o matic to get the amount of raise for my fretboard?
