  1. I changed the string and it improved by about 10%, but it was an old string (unused, but old) so im gonna change it again and see what happens. if that doesn't work what else could it be? thanks
  2. hi there, i have usa strat, and the top e string is considerably quieter than the other strings when amplifiied, but has a consistant acoustic volume. the pickup height is the same over all strings (i have raised them and lowered them, and the difference remains the same) . this problem exists on all pickup settings. any ideas as to what could be causing this problem - thanks
  3. no, no diagram or anything. they came as though they had just been ripped out of a guitar(obvious clue was bits of solder on the end of the wires) one of them says "samshin" on the underside, which is probably japanese for "bought by a fool" if anyone knows, I would really appreciate identification. thanks for the link, though im not ready for any kind of schematic yet. I will do a bit more routing and lower them then, and get some pots. thanks.
  4. ok i need your help and experience please. i am building my first guitar, learning as i go along, and doing it on a shoestring budget. and ive run into a problem with my wiring. ive picked up (no pun intended) a generic humbucker or 2 on the cheap, and i have no idea what or where ect. i guessed they were passive, and attempted to hook one up to see what happened. i couldnt find any basic information at all about guitar electronics, all the tutorials I've found are based on a basic knowledge of electronnics, which i dont have. so I guessed. as I dont have any other components than the output jack (temporarily borrowed from a dead squire) I did this. wiring diagrammembers.aol.com/celadoreuk/wiring.jpg simple huh? it seems to work fine, nice loud sounds and no hum or buzz, untill i put it through heavy distortion. when i get awful screeching noises when i mute strings, and it occasionally continues as a high pitched feed back, but it sounds to me more like a fault noise. so my question is have I done something wrong? is it grounded incorrectly? two important notes: 1. I have no cavities yet, the wires are just sellotaped to the body so far(although properly protected, there not touching where they shouldnt be) 2. the pickup is very close(2-3ml) to the strings. I have heard that this might be too close and distort the natural clean tone. although it doesnt sound it when clean, could this be what is driving the distortion to scream? oh and does it make any difference if i swap the red and blue wires? thanks, sorry if i have rambled...
  5. i personally (in my small experience) have found this place to be extremely nice, passive freindly and kind to new members. if any of you have ever ventured over to the metaltabs.com forum, you will see what i mean. normal acceptable posts by new members are usually replied to by both moderators and members posting the most insulting humiliating things they can. after a while, the thread is closed, but not before the "n00b" is ripped into by pretty much every regular. some general rules to posting there: 1. do not post unless you have 200+ posts already 2. do not ask questions 3. do not do anything 4. completely correct use of the queens english, grammar, spelling is essential having said that, i love that place. oh and god forbid anyone actually does something stupid, because there are some regulars who have an exquisite ability to manipulate the english language. heres where one guy went wrong... heres his attack on a moderator... strangely, not many people get banned there, if they dont take personall offence, they are allowed to stay. after a month or two, if they are still hanging on, the verbal offence dies down.
  6. is there any problem with making nuts from wood? i can see the problem with balsa wood, but a would a tightgrain mahogany nut cause any problems? why does nobody do it? what tone implications might it have? which questions have i omitted to ask? thank you all in advance.
  7. it doesnt look bad, just like you're not that good at getting whats in your head on paper. am i right? the curve between the horns is the same sort of thing im doing on a guitar im building. doesn't glen benton of deicide use a rickenbacker?

  9. no, no, its a white guitar. whats primer?(yes im an idiot). the silver is everywhere. with the white only on the bits that show. i just thaught it might have a vital role in the electronics or something.
  10. i just took a guitar apart, and noticed the whole thing was covered in silver paint. i noticed it before lining the inside if the (electronics compartment) of an ibanez, and figured that it was conductive, something to do with the grounding or something. then i took apart another guitar, and realised that the whole body is covered inderneath the white finish. even in the neck pocket. is this something important? some fundamental that i have missed? or am i being stupid?
  11. thanks for the replies sorry, i dont actually know the names/jargon of all this. whats the difference between bolt-on, set-neck, neckthrough, etc.? i was going more for playability at the high end than aesthetics, but i suppose it still applies. would a large cut-away on the underside be compensated for none at all on the upper "wing"? or would the neck twist under pressure? as far as pickups and other routings go, i am willing to put them anywhere.
  12. i am building a solid body bolt on from one good piece of mahogany. i bought an ibanez neck, EXseries(normal fender scale i think), with a view to replacing it with my own in time. my question is, how thin can i make the body? presumably, the width is dependant on the width of the neck plus support(where the neck attaches). so how thin can the support be? bearing in mind i am using good strong mahogany. thanks.

  14. cheers guys i would have gone for pre made stuff, but for whatever reason i want to make it all myself, i would feel like i was cheating a bit buying a fretboard. also, i want to make a longer scale guitar than normal, say about 800mm (25.5 is about 648 mm) because this will allow lower tuning with thinner strings and it will loose less attack. does anybody know any problems with this? i think i will change my mind about the truss rod though, (as i was getting a friend who is an experienced welder/metalworker to make it) how much does the rod need to bend? i read somewhere about 6mm is this right?
  15. im just about to start building my first guitar, and have a few questions. 1. the truss rod channel has to be deeper at the center right? is this only for single action trusses. I.E. a steel rod with a thread and a bolt.? if the channel has to be deeper at the center, should the truss rod be placed in strait, or should it follow the curve? ive read that when the rod is tightened it tries to straiten and bends the neck in doing so does this mean a bit of wood is needed on top of the rod to counteract it and stop it straiteneing with no effect on the actual neck? (if this doesnt make sense just ask) 2. does anything need to be done to the wood in the way of treatment and such further than it would have got already(assuming its wood a builder might have)? 3. how much difference is there between virtual and actual fret mesurements? meaning the twelth fret wont be in exactly the same place as the harmonic, because pressing down tightens the string. is this a gradual difference, and if so, should i just put the frets on and adjust the string with the bridge? im sure ive got some more, but i think this will do for now. ive searched pretty thouroghly throughout this forum and couldnt find what i was looking for, so maybe you could help thanks.
