  1. For wood ordering im getting ready to do i would like to know Width of body at widest points Hieght of body at longest point. Full length of guitar. thanks
  2. Im getting ready to build a similiar guitar to steve via's Jem. I planed on having a neckthrough design made with the following woods. Korina (Black Limba)-Body (or wings in this case since the neck goes through the center) For the neck i was planning on having a 5 laminent neck, but i canot make a final descion on the woods. I was going to use either birdseye maple with 2 Ebony stripes or Black limba to match the body with 2 ebony stripes Fretboard-ebony Decorative laminent top- Buckey Burl I very much like the characteristics of blacklimba tone wise i have heard which is why i chose it for the body wood, and i am sure having the ebony fretboard and stripes going therough it will brighten it up a bit. I also like the idea of the birdeye maple with ebony, but i fear that the combination of ebony+maple+ebony fretboard may be too bright and overtake the warmth the korina will provide. I like Hot bright snappy sound, but i just want to make sure i wont be making the use of korina useless by having to much of a "bright wood" combination. My final concern is wieght distribution. I dont want either the neck of body to wiegh to much more than another. I figure by using korina throughout with ebony stripes the wieght will be fiarly uniform throughout the guitar as no material is heavier or lighter than another. On the side of using maple/ebony neck with korina body i dont know how the wieght will be distributed. thx for help all.
  3. Take a pick. The possibilities are endless. And the only limit being your own imagination. But with Limba type body wood I would go for something with brightness to it. Little snap....like maple, wenge, walnut......just do seach on tonewood on the site and read up for evening or two.....you will see much info coming up and you simply make pick based on what others say, do, whatever makes good sense to you, and what types of wood are available to you. Using just 1/8" of top will have little effect on tone. Going for two 1/4" tops/backs will defintely have some effect on tone. This is not necessarily a bad thing. With top/back you can color (read: advance) the tonal properties of your body. Off set some of the warmth of Limba for instance. If you pick top/back wood for cosmetic reasons......then you might wanna go for thinner top. What type of guitar are we talking about....2" body wood???....I hear LP copy???? ← thANKS for the reply. im actrualy not going LP copy. Im doing a copy of steve via body, or joe satriani's. Damn i just cant make up my mind yet lolz! i might go with Steve via body and just kinda customize it a bit, so basically a soloist body as warmoth calls it. Im not exactly sure how thick those are but i wanted to go 2" cuase most people said that was standard and i wanted to go big so if i need i can plane it down. Im still in the process of picking out hardware and such so nothing is final. Im still in the middle of reading a guitar building book and i wanna finish it before i make any final body desicions...I thought maple would probly be a good wood to go with since its bight to counter the wrmth of korina slightly, but i want the sustain of korina, they said its one of the best besides brazilian rosewood. I just cant find any info of the tone of myrtlewood.
  4. hey all, i was wondering what woods would be strong enough to go on the list as neck woods? Im going to make a 5 laminent neck, and i was originally going to use maple and wenge, but im wondering what other options are good? And what kind of tone will it yeild? also i was wondering if my body wood decision is ok. Im going to use Korina (blacklimba) but i was thinking about laminating a 1/4 inch peice of burled myrtlewood on the top and the back. then i would carve into that when rounding it out. i was hoping to get a effect similar to this guitar http://www.galleryhardwoods.com/images/client/big/40.jpg so you would be able to see the korina when the myrtlewood gets carved deep enough on the sides. . so i would have a 1.5 inch peice of korina and .5 inch worth of the myrtlerood. will mixing the wood like that have any negative side effects on tone?
  5. wood it be a good or bad idea to stagger the laminent pieces on a neck. as in mulitple small peices all glued together. like a wood floor.
  6. i tried searching but didnt find anything....So what exactly does it mean if your wood is quartered and why is it better? i keep hearing people always say your neck wood should be quartered.
  7. board feet is calculated as widthXlenth divided by 144. so for instance a board that is 5x10 is aprox 0.347 B/f generally they will list differenct priced for different thickness. so for instance when they list wood it would be something like 1/4"=$10 B/f 1/2"=$20 B/f 3/4"=$30 B/f 1" = $40 B/f you get the idea? for your body blank youll want something around 1 3/4" or 2" thick. lenth and width will depend on what guitar body you make. but genneraly you see the blanks about 14"x20" or so. for the neck youll probly want something 2" or 3" thick so you got lots of room to carve it down to your hand, 3" wide or so so you can customiz it to yourdesired fretboard, and for length probly around 30" or so for a bolt on neck. 30" should be more than enough length to build a peghead with the neck wood. good luck.
  8. hm, good point it might be a litle too busy looking while im playing it too. i think ill just get the ebony uber smooth and put vine inlay in it. is there any kind of clear coat or anything you are susposed to put on a fretboard? i could be wrong but like i said i find it almost impossible that those fender maple fretboards felt like they did with out some kind of clear coating.
  9. whoops lol sorry didnt mean Pb. i think perhaps it might have to do with a finish material? i was playing a lot of fender tele and strats a bit ago cuase i just ran to guitar center and those maple necks are just freaken awesome smooth. it must be some kind of clearcoat they are using? in that case is it possible to use flame maple as a fretboard? i know theres soft and hard maple but i dont know which category flame is under. i thought it would be sweet to have a flame maple board dyed black becuase my body front is gunna have a flame maple laminated top dyed black.
  10. which wood would be the best wood in terms of how smooth it is? im making a lead guitar and i know my carvin is smooth as heck which is ebony but i was wondering if theres anything better, or does the smoothness come from some sort of finish material?
  11. hey thanks for the site, it didnt have the soloist body but my brother found the one he wanted to build lol. so thanks
  12. is there any difference between them besides prices though? will i feel or hear it?
  13. hey does anyone have this style of guitar to take some measurements for me. ive been looks all over for them but cant find them I need to width of the body(at the widest part) The thickness of the body (at the thickest part) The length of the body (at the longest part) The full lenth of the guitar from body begin to headstock end The lenth of the neck from where it connects to the body to the begining of the headstock (i dont want the the headstock/peice with tuners on it in this measurement becuase im customizing my own) The length of the fretboard The width of the fretboard at the back of the neck (by headstock) The width of the fretboard at the beginning of neck (by pickups) If anyone knows any places i can get templates for the RG series let me know. My guitar will be like the RG series in the aspect of it having 2 humbuckers and a single coil, and a tremlo bridge. thanks all i just need these rough measurements so i can order my body blanks, my guitar is going to be very similar to the soloist style body so i figured ide just order wood off its dimensions.
  14. which ebony is the kind that people use for fretboards?
  15. yea basswood will be just the wings. i know the neck migh be a lil heavey from the added wenge but the neck will run through the guitar and be over twice as thick when ut runs through the body o that should even somewieght out a bit. i thought maple an basswood were about the same weight in the first place?
