  1. My stupidity amazes me sometimes. You'd think i'd measure the fretboard i'd been given Spot on mate, StewMac's pre-slotted are indeed 24 9/16" scale
  2. As some of you may or may not know, I’m about to start a LP project but I’ve come across a problem. (Trying to eliminate all possible problems before I actually start cutting wood ) Les Pauls are made to a scale of 24 9/16" these days but commonly come under the category of 24 3/4". Unaware of this, I bought myself a pre slotted 24 3/4" fingerboard from StewMac only to later realize all templates and plans are based around 24 9/16. This may or may not be a big issue as we are only talking about 3 sixteenths of an inch, but as far as intonation goes, I’d imagine it’s a big issue. So I’m trying to work out the best possible solution, should I just knock the bridge back a bit to allow the extra length, glue the neck to the body higher up (which would probably see the body joining around the 17th fret as opposed to the 16th, which I’m not keen on at all), or just buy another fingerboard and cut the slots myself to a 24 9/16" scale? Any thoughts on this Thanks
  3. Thanks ever so much Setch If my LP turns out half as well as yours i will be a very happy man
  4. I'm currently about to start a LP project. This will be my first real build. I could've started out with a Strat or something as my first build, but quite frankly, i love LP's. The fact that i'm left handed, in my eyes, gives me even more reason to build my own guitars. Although i'm really excited about all this, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't a tad scared. Mainly due to carved tops and neck angles! After reading these forums for many months now, i think the most valuable thing i've learnt is "Patience is the Key" I'd like to think i have a pretty good understanding of all parts of the guitar. All except one thing... Truss Rods! I've opted for the traditional Gibson style truss rod for this build as sold by StewMac. Although i've searched for posts and read every tutorial i can get my hands on theres still a few answers to questions that remain unknown to me. First off. Are there any exact measurements you need to go by when installing the truss rod. I've read the anchor nut should be located under the 21st fret. Is this just a rough guide? A couple of mm either way is not going to harm? 2. Not saying this would happen but lets say someone was loosening the truss rod, and the adjusting nut grips onto the rod. Whats stopping the rod from seperating from the anchor nut? 3. When making the fillet, how much space should the rod have to move in its channel? Obvioulsy the fillet will be pressing down on the rod so i assume not a lot? 4. How should i fix the truss rod in place. Just by tightening the bolts? I know u-channel rods are glued in place, i assume i need not bother as the traditional rod is 3/16" thick / round. I can't help but think i'm making this whole truss rod thing a lot more complicated that it ought to be but it's the only thing in the build that i really am unsure about. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated
  5. Ah thats great, thankyou! Great site of yours btw, very nice work.
  6. I live in the UK. Anyone know of a place to get 1" plain maple tops from for a LP project im working on? Plenty of curly and flamed but i find that all a bit to fancy for my taste Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
  7. really in white? i'm not tryin to scam anyone here, i'm not doing this with a view to selling it. forget i asked
  8. no i got it on ebay from some folks in Germany i'm not 100% it original Gibson but all the same its very good.
  9. I recently imported a Burny Les Paul, as pictured here except mine is left handed http://image.www.rakuten.co.jp/chuy...1058678956.jpeg I've always loved the Custom in white except Gibson don't make it for lefty's plus i own a couple of Japanese lefties and have been impressed with the quality, this is no exception. Couple of days ago i bought a replacement Gibson overlay http://www.jc0r.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/headstock.JPG Now i know imitations are a big no no! As an original Gibson owner i agree, however i'm bending the rules slightly in my head as Gibson don't make the guitar i want for left handers. My question to you folks is, the headstock on the Burny isn't the exact shape as the Gibson overlay, it's almost but not quite. To just replace the overlay would require i shave the headstock a little and repaint it. My other option is to remove the decals from the Gibson overlay, and apply them to the Burny and just refinish the front of the headstock. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
