  1. Hmm okay, so i just grain filled the body of one of them that has purple heart. I guess if i grain fill the neck i should put on some coats of laquer then? How many coats do u think then? Oh and ill probably leave the cocobolo natural
  2. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE ON THIS?? i really dunno if i should finish these woods or leave them natural
  3. I don't know about the oil level in these two woods compared with rosewood. So nitro or no nitro, and if i do how many coats do u suggest?
  4. Hi there been around the forum for awhile now and this place has been great. Couldn't have done built my guitars without you guys. It's been great building these while in college and finished fully my first one a dreadnought and working on these two electric guitars and a lyraharp guitar, but was lookin for some thougts about the electric guitars. So i wanted some takes on how i should stain these guitars basically just the maple tops will be stained with color and maybe the back but maybe not. I have alcohol based analine dyes in tabacco amber yellow and med brown. So anything with those colors would be fine. the pics for my guitars are at http://usera.imagecave.com/ddv/ -click under teh guitar golder also with the necks have pearl inlay and so should i apply sealer or laquer to them to protect them. the necks are purpleheart and cocobolo i think. THANKS FOR ANY THOUGHTS
  5. thanks yea for the bass i'll choose between a jazz+precision or jazz+musicman. I'll give billlawrence a look though a bit later. My friend recommended some dimarzios. Mmm i've heard of teh L-500xl before so i'll look into that. I'll have to check out what the coil tap bit is about i know its electronics and i've seen some topics on it. No worries about the neck. Built a dreadnought and currently working on a harp guitar so i think i got the neck and fretboard covered . any ideas for the electric. Thanks for ur tips on the bass
  6. Hi it's been awhile since i've been back to this great site while i've been working on my other project but the dream machines been on overtime lately and so i'm back. Allright so i want to build an electric and a bass guitar... and assume i know virtually nothing though im decent with wood. I've got the most important ideas about neck angle, going with angled head, and it will be a neck through. i've got no idea about wiring but i think i can understand the schematics i've seen or find some nearby help. Electric will be by 25.5" scale and the bass will be 34" scale. Also i've decided to go with a non tremelo saddle for the electric because i'm a begginer, as beginnner as they come, and they seem to be troublesome. What do u guys think, i'd like the versatiltiy but they seem unreliable. Im not afraid of the extra routing so what're ur thoughts Okay so what are the most common neck widths for both types? Not that important i could work this one out based on saddle width and guessint the neck width Now the most important question "which pickups" Electric i'd like to go with a single coil and a humbucker Bass i thought some humbucker and a jazz version Okay i know nothing about the way they sound and i know its a subjective and i know i should go to a shop and try a bunch to know what i'd like but i've got to spend the rest of my time studying. So are there any combinations that you know sound pretty good and got good versatility? What combinations do you guys like? and what specific pickups you guys recommend though im a broke college student. Appreciate any help you can spare and any other advice you got. And yea i've been reading the forums and getting loads of information. Thanks guys.
  7. oh yea and i meant the thickness of the top. As i didnt know much about guitars i really got creative with building everything. i really should have done more research. I used maple for the top (which i hear isnt so great...sadness) and mahogany for the back sides and neck. So yea the guitar is almost done. All that's left is the inlay finishing design and carving out the top if its too thick. Any ideas on finishing. Hope it turns out great but if it's decent ill be real happy.
  8. hmmm thanks for all the replies. I've never really posted things before and so i dont know how to post pics though if somebody gives me a quick tip i could post some pics of the guitar so far. Actually when i think about how much i've spent so far on the guitar its about 100-120 maybe less. The thing that cost so much was the pearl man i never knew that stuff would put a hole in my wallet. Anyways the neck is kinda lookin like crap at the moment cuz their's expoxy all aver the neck can't wait to sand it down. One last thing does anyone know the typical thickness of a dreadnought guitar. I did hear about MIMF but when i went thereit looked all complicated and didnt have as nice a format as this forum. Thanks for the advice. ill put it to good use. Ill think about calculating the size of my friend's soundhole and then working it out so i have the same amt of space.
  9. Hi i'm a college student who was just starting to pick up the guitar. Anyways im too poor to afford anything so i figured i would build my acoutic guitar. I've not quite a bit a woodworking but i've found that building in instrument is really different than cabinetry stuff. So i didnt even know great forums on building guitars exsisted till i found this one in mysearch for finding info on finishing the project. But the question i have is because i wanted to do something intresting and i'm decent with scroll sawing so i scrolled out this dragon piece right in the soundhole. I was wondering now if it will be produce really adverse affects in the sound. Also what's the difference for the F type soundholes or the upper corner ones or the normal in thein the middle large soundhole. I hope you guys have some answers. In anycase really great site and after fumbling through my first guitar i hope it turns out allright.
