  1. First, the book came yesterday! Yes!!! Now the question. I finished laminating the neck yesterday and despite the fact that I planed the wood then spent hours sanding it I am seeing tiny gaps in spots between the pieces of wood. Is this a huge problem, or can I fill the gaps with CA or a mixture of glue and saw dust? Will this be strong enough to support 6 strings or should I start over with it?
  2. Ok...still waiting on the book I ordered to come in, but in the mean time I've started laminating my neck (got so into the work zone I forgot to take pics like I had originally intended) and spent the last two days search for answers to questions and wood. The one question that I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer to is this: is there any reason I would not want to use wings that have been made from 2 pieces of joined wood on a neck through 6 string bass? I can think of a bunch of positives (less likely to warp, if done right it will look cool, $, etc.). Also, if this is not advisable, can anyone suggest where I might find 2 pieces of lacewood that are 2"x6"x24" (6" is bare minimum...I'd prefere 6.5 or 7 so I have a little wiggle room). Thanks! Chris
  3. Hi! After about 4 days of searching specific topics (one being tonal qualities of wood) on this board and google I decided it's time to introduce myself get an opinion or 2. First, I've had several years of general woodworking experience and have always wanted build solid body guitars (hollow bodies look fun, but I don't have the space to get into bending wood). I play bass (on and off since HS...musical interests are as broad as they get but I like to play blues, jazz and at church) and bass is what I want to build. I was thinking I wanted to start with a 6 string (why start small...know what I mean?) So anyway...the question. I'm still in the planning phases of the bass, and kicking ideas around about wood. I'd like a tone that emphasises lows and minimizes the mid range. I was going to use through-neck construction and was thinking about making the neck out of ash and bubinga (5 layers...ash-bub-ash-bub-ash) and making the body out of either lacewood or mahogany. The ash/bubinga neck is mostly because I already have both in my shop. I'm leaning towards lacewood for the body because I've worked with it (turning bowls) and like it...it's purdee! Thoughts??? Thanks! Chris
