  1. There is a 2020 on ebay right now.. expensive though and it has 2 jacks on the front so i'm afraid you wouldn't get much for the parts without the piezo in it. I'm still wondering if there isn't a way to use a bridge plate transducer, like the baggs ibeam somehow. Maybe actually set in the body right between the trem studs under the top lam? Would have to get creative with amplifying the signal, but it would be nice to figure out a way around that that is simpler than a floyd with piezo saddles. You can get an ibeam for 70 or 80 bucks.. might be worth gutting it and seeing if the element could be used creatively someother way to achieve the same effect. I know the piezos need pressure from the strings, but the BPT picks up resonant vibrations from the bridgeplate in the acoustic and maybe the same concept could be applied somehow to the electric.. Would probably work ok in a semi-hollow.. As long as you had an area of the top that could vibrate somewhat you would be in business.. and they sound awesome.
  2. Well I have a sansamp GT2 and what you described are all the things I like and dislike about the sansamp. I used to do a live rig that was ampless.. I ran a line of effects, ended up with the GT2, then hit a real DI box (the sansamp is not a DI, that's a nice addition to the behringer if it works) and then outl Live on stage i was very impressed with the sansamp, but that's because it's running through an amp and being blown back at me at high volume. Recording at home with the sansamp, i got thin, brittle distortion that just sounded like DI'd distortion pedal sound. For home recording I dont think you can beat a pod, or do what I do.. stick your 12 watt amp cranked to 10 or 12 in an isolation box with a mic trapped inside If you just want simple, real tube sounds.. you can go that route. You can always add effects in post as far as choruses and stuff like that. When I record, i just want the best tone possible without effects.. then color the sound afterward. I generally love behringer stuff. I wonder how it would be to run that pedal into their tube preamp (which is just 40 us bucks) and then into your system. Might warm it up some and I think it has cabinet simulation built into it.
  3. That looks like the wood's grain. You can't make mahogany look like that. If you try painting the grain on it will look like poo Your best bet is to get a top laminate of some wood that has that kind of grain, otherwise be happy with a mahogany finish.

  5. if it was a flattop tele, there would be no question.. but with the carve, and how i'm going to do the control knobs and recesses.. i think it calls for the 3+3.. I'll have to hold the designs up to each other but with the feedback and my own leanings, i feel pretty good about the 3+3..

  7. There was a post about this a while back.. seemed at the time the only option was to waste an ibanez for the trem.. part out the rest on ebay. There were rumors about graphtech and the piezo saddles but i have no idea when that will happen.
  8. Sometimes you have to do some grain fill with poplar.. but it shouldn't be a problem. My problem with basswood (and it could be the variety i used) is it fuzzes up horribly Trying to cut body contours on a basswood body I was making, there were some patches that i sanded, scraped, planed, etc.. and they still would not get smooth. It is for carving and is VERY soft. You're more stable with alder. All three of those choices are most attributed to something in between maple and mahogany.. Not totally middy, but if you want some real sparkle you could cap it with maple.. Would make the face harder too. Man, going from wenge to alder, your tools won't nnow what to do
  9. Can I ask why electronic? One thing you might consider is a custom maple kit.. 99.999% of maple high end drums are made of Keller Shells. There are a ton of companies that make drums and have good deals. On Ebay, check out Donoho Drums. It's a dude outside of nashville and he has great prices on his shell packs. Our drummer has several kits, and the Donaho he uses the most. Top notch stuff. You could get a shell pack of those for about a grand or less.. and be int he quality area of DW and the other boutiquy sets. They sound killer and really project. Electonic kits are nice in certain situations.. church, small coffee houses, headphone practice.. but i've played gigs with an e-drummer and it's really hard to get the sound right if your sound folks aren't good.. and nothing is worse than not being able to hear the drummer.
  10. DDrums were the king of mesh head elec drums back in the day.. the one armed dude from def leppard played ddrums. ( i don't remember his name, i'm not being mean) roland just kind of took over the market. If you can get a roland or pintech, you'll be current and not have to worry about parts or compatibility of equipment. Not sure what you mean about pintech not being what you need.. They are the same thing as vdrums. they make both mesh and rubber surface drums, but then again, so does roland. edit.. the TD6s are not mesh heads. those are the old rubber kind. If you're used to skins, these things will wear you out.. high impact on the wrists.. the heads sap a lot of the stick attack and save your wrists.

  13. OK These are rough! but this is my dilemma. I am leaning toward the 3x3 peghead with a scarf joint.. or I could do the 6 with a straight neck like a fender. Which peghead do you think compliments the body style more appropriately? (or if you think they both blow -- i can take it ) I'm cutting this puppy out tonight and would love your opinions. And I guess if i'm ripping off anyone, feel free to tell me that too. Thanks,
  14. Could be an old baretta, or a pacer body. Id' do an EVH clone.. stripe that puppy It does look like a standard strat neck pocket. Is it real wood? or is it ply? Go get you some red, black and white bicycle paint and a neck and you'll be good to go
  15. aside fromt he advice to search and , i would strongly second the last advice.. MAKE TEMPLATES.. if you make the perfect pattern in MDF to route your trem cavity, you won't go wrong. if you go by trial and error on your body, you have about a 95% chance of screwing it up. One of my guitars became firewood back in the day as I was trying to route a trem cavity by clamping straight edges and only doing 1 edge at a time. Not a good idea.
  16. Personally, i don't like barre chords which is how a lot of folks teach to play the F.. that's just my personal opinion though. I usually play an F and mute the 1st and 6th strings.. A ton of jazz chords you'll find are played on only 4 strings, you just get used to it. So anyway, i play an f like this (low to high) X3321X Fingers (index, middle, ring, pinky) would be XRPMIX Plus it's easy to shift back and forth from C to F this way.. if you play C X32010 then shift to X3321X or X33211 (letting your index finger just barre the 1st and 2nd string ont he first fret) you'll find the switch from C to F is much faster thatn playing the traditional 132211 barre pattern. Hope that makes some sort of sense This question would have been better posted in "off topics" or "players Corner" This particular forum is about building acoustics, not learning to play them Just a friendly FYI
  17. well my first instinct is that upper fret access is not going to be very comfortable.. you might come back without a finger!! but i see a lot of these metal designs and i guess that isn't too much of an issue, or you all wouldn't keep building them This is like a roarshaach test I see a dragon in there. or some kind of horned creature. From a design standpoint, the only thing I would say is the bottom (the lower bout) is too clean fiven the detail you've put on the horn area. You could make the bottom look more like a snout of some sort to complete the shape.. Or if that's not what yuo're going for, adjust the silhouette so the top doesn't make you expect something like that on the bottom. Cool design idea though. Would be really cool relief carved to show off all those features

GuitarFrenzy is selling some sweet looking swamp ash. The boards you are looking at are probably hard ash, which is heavy - you might want to go with a different back wood if you do a top in hard ash for weight reasons, but it depends on the design you are building. If you are doing a top bottom laminate, you can alway shollow out some chambers to help with the weight issue.

Well Re-Ranch is your best source for tinted, guitar specific colors in lacquer, but if you have a woodcraft anywhere around you can pick up Behlen jet spray, which are nitro based shaders in rattle can form. You can get Deft nitro clear in rattlecans from there, and Lowes generally carries Deft as well. Some folks have found it at walmart, but I have never seen at my local walmart. Deft and Behlen both make fairly easy to get spray cans of nitro product. Deft is clear only though. There may be some other brands but i'm not aware of them.
  20. no...it's really not. i remember the time between justice and the black album vividly.metallica were becoming the kings of their genre."justice" was perfect.enough musicality to drag in borderline rockers,but still agressive enough to satisfy the mainstays....and at the same time reaching into new territory musically.the black album sold multitudes of copies on it's very first day...on the back of "justice" i was one of those suckers.i tried to like it...but i ended up using it to tune my guitar ← Right, but it's out with the old and in with the new.. At that moment.. legions of teeny boppers thought that enter sandman was the best song ever written, and emtallica garnered a whole new generation of fans.. It's one of those feeling old moments when some kid comes up to you and says "have you heard that new band metallica.. man they are awesome!!" And you're thinking.. "dude you were in diapers when they were putting out their best stuff" I guess I heard someone else say it here but the black album marked their move from speed band to a hard rock band.. I was absolutely blown away the first time i heard their early stuff.. i'm a drummer too, so hearing a band play that fast and that locked in to each other, was just insane.. the more they go they have continually evolved. I'll probably get flamed but I liked load and re-load and some of their newer stuff (never listened to St Anger).. I couldn't stand the black album, but I love going back and listening to their first quartet of albums.. I'm a programmer and it's great music to program to.. lol...
  21. That's going to look top notch I bet. Nice looking wood. That woodrat thing is neat looking. I bet that comes in handy. I like the clamps too those besseys? My friend has a bunch of them, I always "borrow" them when I do glueups..
  22. just make sure the pieces are well planed, and you use a consistent pressure to clamp then when gluing. Nothing wrong with a multi laminate body. If you like the look of ash, put an ash cap over poplar or something like that.
  23. That's cool. I was into video for a while, before I got into programming. Mostly PC MiniDV NLE stuff.. It had to take hobby status though and eventually took "don't have time" status. They do spend some money down there in nashville though. Esp the country music stuff. The CCM scene probably doesn't warrant paying a lot for vids. not sure where they play CCM vids anymore It's crazy being on a feature film set.. Would be fun to work PA on some of those things.. hang out by the catering truck all the time
  24. Well said. If someone wants to make a living in music, i say go for it. You can make a living even if you don't "make it big" but so many people give up cause they think "if i just get that demo online someone will discover me and i'll get a free pass to the big-time" Every now and then that happens, but most successful musicians worked their asses off to get there.. and ate lots of ramen soup
